Listening to NPR this morning, I heard this:

Brian Eno's Essay on Singing

I think it's really great.

(edit..."Brain" to "Brian", although either way is probably appropriate)

Derek Siver's blog had a couple quotes from Brian Eno too.

“The most important thing in a piece of music is to seduce people to the point where they start searching.”

“Produce things that are as strange and mysterious to you as the first music you ever heard.”

Thanks, Nathan. This brought back memories. Years ago I sang accapella tenor in several barbershop quartets. I do not read music and play piano, guitar and sing by ear. The sound of a perfect chord produces an overtone but ONLY if timing, pitch, voice balance(eq)and vowel shaping are perfect. Tough to do and great training! Learned a lot about teamwork too. Not to name drop (OK I am) but I once had the chance to talk with Gordon Lightfoot. He told me that he missed singing barbershop and it influenced his songwriting! By the way, I really enjoyed your rendition of Moon River. Now THAT's what I call "getting people out who have left the room". I only wish we had a venue like that here. Cheers. Brian

...or Blue Moon, yes? Although, I have received requests for Moon River, so maybe someday. Thanks very much, Brian.

Is that audio up on NPR's site, yet? If it is, a body really should hear it from Eno, himself. I'm glad I caught him on the radio. Either way, though (read or heard), it's pretty poignant.

DUHHH! sorry Nathan. I was typing the post and lost it the first time. SOMEHOW Moon River got in there on the repost. Maybe you should add "Memories" too! LOL. On my way to kid's Christmas gig. Hope I don't forget the BOSE! Cheers!

Brian

I would never have pictured Eno singing these songs, but they're the ones he lists for his group singing sessions:

Eno's Group-Sing Song List:
Can't Help Falling In Love
Love Me Tender
Keep On the Sunny Side
Sixteen Tons
Will the Circle Be Unbroken
Dream
If I Had a Hammer
Love Hurts
I'll Fly Away
Down By the Riverside
Chapel of Love
Wild Mountain Thyme
Que Sera, Sera
Cotton Fields
