Hello,
I just received my Bose 1 model 1 system with one b1 module yesterday. I bought this purely for my personal use at home. I sing Indian hindi (Bollywood) karaokes through a paid website.
No instruments attached to system. I just want to attach a computer and microphone. Any specific way for to get the best sound? Any special preset recommended? Do I need a mixer to add echo effect?
I may use this in small party's once in a while. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Hi milin1609

Thank you for joining the message board.

Here is a picture of how you can connect your computer to the Model I.

You can click the picture for more details.

I would probably try running the connections to Channels 3 and 4 (and hence, no Preset) to start.

What kind of microphone are you using?

Yes, if you want effects you will need an outboard device like a mixer or an effects unit. Did you have a specific one in mind?

Thanks ST for a quick reply.
I will try your suggestions. I am using Pyle wireless microphones. Is it good? I really don't have much knowledge.
I don't know any such device like mixer or an effect unit. What would you suggest? Since, I am using it personally, I am not looking at high end models.
Thanks.

Hi milin1609,

Thanks for the information. I was not familiar with the Pyle wireless microphones but did some searches and I think you should be fine with Preset 01 (Handheld microphone). You can try the other microphone Presets too. You may find something you like better.

For Reverb; well let me encourage you to try singing without reverb first. It may seem a little uncomfortable at first but with some practice I think you will find that you have greater clarity this way.

But if the style of your music Indian hindi (Bollywood) requires reverb to sound authentic, then you can look at any number of small mixers with effects.

Here are some ideas:

Yamaha MG82CX Mixer with Effects

Nady MM-14FX

Behringer MIX800 MiniMIX Karaoke Machine with Voice Canceller and FX Features

But the ultimate effects unit for your application would be the Bose T1 ToneMatch® Audio Engine (T1®) .

This will allow you to have up to 3 microphones with separate effects chains and Presets, as well as inputs for your computer (also with effects and Presets).

It is not inexpensive, but it was designed to work perfectly with the Model I. If you decide to try it, you will want to order the T1 ToneMatch® Audio Engine power supply.

Hi,
I played with it for a week. I think, I need a little echo. May be due to the kind of music.(indian). I am going to order a mixer and see, it make any difference.
Other disappoinment is, I can not seems to get a decent settings. I have too much feedback(squeak) form the microphone. The balance of music does not sound right. Either too much music or too much vocal.
I need some step by step help, as I am a new to this.
Thanks.

Hi milin1609,
Here are some suggestions for your connections.

MG82CX Mixer Inputs
Channel 1 - Microphone (pan all the way to the LEFT)
Channel 2 - unused
Channel 3 - Backing tracks into line R (RIGHT)
Channel 4 - Backing tracks into line R (RIGHT)

MG82CX Mixer Outputs
Stereo Out LEFT to L1® Model I Channel 1
Stereo Out RIGHT to L1® Model I Channel 2

I would set Model I Presets like this:

Channel 1 - Preset 01
Channel 2 - Preset 00 or Preset 57 (try it both ways)

Following the connections above, you have
  • the microphone running to Channel 1 (only) and
  • the backing tracks running to Channel 2 (only)

Back after long time.
Somewhat happy with the setting. But still need to tweak it. There is a humming sound from speaker. When singing, you can't hear, but in the middle when there is a pause, you can hear it prominently. Suggestions please. Thanks.

Hi milin1609,

It sounds like a ground loop hum.

The first thing to try - make sure that all devices that plug into AC power are connected to the same source.

Try plugging the L1®, Mixer, Karaoke Machine, any other devices, into the same power strip.

The other major source of 'hummm' is when you have an audio cable running near a power-converter; such converters are often used with small minimixers -- a.k.a. "wall warts".

Alright. After lot of mental debate, I finally purchased T1 Tonematch audio engine to replace my Yamaha MX82GX mixer. Somehow, I was not happy with that set up. I also purchased Audix OM5 microphone.
So, I need a hook up help of L1 model1, T1, Computer and Audix OM5. No Insruments. I mainly use it for my personal pleasure singing Hindi(Bolluwood) karaoke. Please give your thoughts. Thanks.

Hi milin1609,

Model I (or Classic) Power Stand
Model I (or Classic) Power Stand. Turn Channel 1 and Channel 2 trim settings all the way off.
Leave the power off for now.

T1 ToneMatch Audio Engine ( T1® )
Connect your power supply to the T1® and turn it on.

Turn the Master Volume off.

Use a ¼ inch jack cable (balanced or unbalanced is fine) from the T1® Master Output to the Model I (or Classic) Power Stand Channel 3 input. Set the Channel 3 Level control to "3".

Connect your Audix OM-5 microphone to the T1® Channel 1.

Connect your computer USB output to the T1® USB input.

Setting the Trim
Singing into the microphone, as loud as you will when you are using the system, turn up the Channel 1 trim control until your voice triggers the light to flick yellow occasionally. If it flickers red, turn it down a bit.

Turn on the Model I (or Classic) Power Stand
Turn Channel 1 level up to about 1/2 way.
Turn up the Master Volume a bit.
You should be hearing your voice.
Adjust the Master Volume to a comfortable level.

Channel 1 - ToneMatch setting.
Set this to:
Category: Vocal Mics
Preset: Audix OM-5

Turn down the volume on your computer. Play some music on your computer and turn up the volume on the computer a bit. You should be hearing that music through the L1®. Adjust the volume of you voice so that it is a little louder than the music.

You can read more details in the wiki.

Many Thanks, ST.
I hooked up the T1 as per your advise and I am thrilled. What a mixer? OR should I say, a mini computer.
I tried all I could do to get a better sound from my old Yamaha mixer. But after hooking T1 as advised, I heard myself like a pro. Very minimum and easy settings.
Very impressed with it. Still need to learn, how to save the settings and all that.
Thank you for your help.

Yesterday, I use the system for a small dinner party of about 150 people. Everybody were impressed with the performance. I have couple of questions:
1. When playing karaoke from the laptop, it sounds good. But from a CD, it seems dull. Is there any way, I can increase the beats of the music? I try channel 3/4 trim, volume, but it does not increase anything.
2. Some songs had too much bass. How to decease it?
3. I was using two laptops. Every time, I had to change the USB cable from one laptop to other to stream music to T1. Is there any way, we can connect two laptop to the T1 audio engine?

I appreciate your help regarding these issues?
Thanks.
