Are there any aspects of the Portable Appliance Test carried out in the UK that should be avoided to prevent damage to the Bose L1 Model 2?

I would appreciate some advice before subjecting my equipment to this compulsory test.

Regards,

Simon

Hi Simon J,

PAT testing (Portable Appliance Testing) was introduced a few years ago in the UK as a requirement to ensure the safe electrical operation of portable equipment. For entertainers and musicians this relates to just about everything which connects to a mains supply.

PAT testing of equipment is required annually and many venues now need to see a PAT testing certificate along with your public liability certificate when you arrive to perform.

The test involves a visual inspection, earth continuity check, insulation testing and a function check of each item. This ensures that the equipment is safe to use both for the user and the public who might come into contact with it.

The tests should do no harm to your L1 and the Bose items needing checking will be the powerstand, any A1 PackLite you may use and the mains leads supplying these items.

I have had PAT testing a wide range of items over the years with no problems at all and these have included L1s, keyboards, mixers etc.

If you are concerned it might be worth asking at a local music store or looking on line for a local PAT testing firm who have experience with musical equipment, as I am sure they can reassure you.

Further information regarding PAT testing can be found via this website: www.pat-testing.info

I hope that helps. Best wishes, Andy

Hi Andy,

Thank you very much for your explanation of the PAT Test, I find it greatly reassuring.

I have my equipment booked in with a certified tester who specialises in testing digital equipment for a test on Monday (1st June), and if there are any issues that arise specific to the Bose equipment I will report them back to the forum.

Regards,

Simon

It might be worth you doing a PAT course and saving yourself a lot of money.
