Hi ST...this is great stuff...I,too,have been thinking along these lines...I was always the guy in the back of the band..I just wanted to play...But now..I'M the only one...sometimes scary, sometimes fun...As to your quote above--
take out the words "be a producer" and substitute the words "take responsibility"

I have almost always taken responsibility for the 'PA' with all the joy, grief, and investment that went along with that. It could be a considered a subset of the producer role, and it probably involved as much commitment as everything else combined (excluding the being a musician part). Using the L1®s made this PA side of the business much simpler. Despite the monetary investment, this picture is much easier to live with than the previous van and van load of nearly-a-ton of gear.

When I considered everything I had invested, pre and post L1®, L1® version was less money and much simpler to manage.

I am certain that the L1® approach (as it takes less effort and investment) has allowed me the time to work other aspects of the business.

Keeping related thoughts together, I'm looking for other discussions where we have talked about the business side of things.

I found this one:

Musician's Biggest Problems - Splitting the Money

I have most always been the owner of the band PA gear, as well as the van, paying for gas, repairs, and performing most of the set up duties. I have also been the booking agent, rehearsal scheduler, and practice space provider. These things I do not mind doing...it's what I love. We have always split the pay equally. I justified it most of the time by acknowledging that the others are more artistic, or professional than I, or have a more important job being the *front man*, and in so, leveling the playing field.

Lately though, I have begun to re-think things a little and find it diffucult to justify equal pay for persons in the band who don't contribute anything outside of what comes naturally to them on stage, in performance. Especially when what happens on stage could, with a little personal woodshedding, be improved upon.

Is even-split the best way?

And
Some MySpace pages and starting the discussion...

Good morning,

This is an extension of the closing discussion we had at Little Switzerland 5/6/08. Im starting it it here...maybe it belongs somewhere else.

As I was saying yesterday, at first MySpace music pages can seem really primitive and to some unprofessional. But, I think they are incredibly effective at conveying the 'health' of a musician/band within their scene. It also is amazing at helping connect musicians to musicians, musicians to fans, and to fans to fans. You can roam for hours finding new and interesting music. And most of all, it lends a sense of community to a music scene, instead of each band looking like it own mini-corporation on their won wwww.(yourbandnamehere).com website. There's a place for band websites as well, but I think for local musicians MySpace has surged past in importance/relevance.

Band websites are very static and often dry - myspace is a living breathing thing. Its sort of like a Wiki for all the music in the world, where both music creators and music lovers can post anything they want and say anything they want. Anybody can post their projects in a common format, for free, fairly easily and quickly.

Original Discussion

Anybody else remember any other really interesting discussions about the business side of things?

RE: Big Grinividing Up The Pay"

I cant think of any other business, other than the music business(speaking locally) ,where the "owner" shares the revenue equally.Think of a person who buys a Mcdonald's franchise..he may have to mortgage his home to come up with the neccesary money to get up and running....does he divide the daily proceeds with his employees??

RE:The future of Live music/Guitar Hero,etc...Its all about CHOICES...The Car killed the horse and buggy,Automatic Transmissions killed Manual Transmissions,Cable helped kill network TV,Video killed the Radio Star, the Computer/Youtube is helping kill ALL TV..CDs, killed Vinyl,Mp3s killed the CD ---people got choices!!...A friend of mine was recently DJ'ing a wedding reception, and got a request for a song he didnt have. The exasperated requestor said"Cant you just download it now?"
---Anyway...to quote Carles Darwin-"It is not the strongest of the species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change."

Video killed the Radio Star

Manual trannies may have been replaced by A/Ts... but thankfully, SMG (Sequential Manual Gearboxes) are slowly killing of the dreadful slushbox automatics as well.

And video may have killed the radio star... but computer animated movies (Pixar) has revived them! Wink

It's ironic that it took this long... and this much technology... to give back to the musician, the control he had in the first place! Hehehe
