My band, Chubb Rock, from Bergen County, NJ, used this new technology for the first time ever on February 19th. This is one of the greatest things to ever happen to music, and our sound was like none ever heard before by our fans. I even decided to give Bose some "mad props" on our website...

http://www.chubbrock.com/Gear.htm

Our show was absolutely amazing, and Bose deserves a lot of the credit. I'm talking people on the dance floors non-stop, Chicks dancing on tables, other chicks attacking the stage and grinding the musicians... haha, use these WITH CAUTION!

We play a lot of Rock'n Roll, and I was suprised at how clean and crisp our "dirty channels" were. Truely, something amazing...

Thanks guys, that's very kind. How are you guys hooking up the systems? I like your song list and would love to learn about your setup (I read the gear list).

Thanks,
Steve

Thanks guys (Holliwil, that makes me feel great because I do the website myself!)

Steve, we keep our setup increadibly simple. Basically, we let the speakers do all the work. My drummer uses 7 microphones into a Behringer mixer, they then input into his personal Bose speaker. He has two B1 units that really bring out the kick drum (which he bypasses the mixer, a helpful hint we picked up from this site).

My bass player also uses 2 B1 units, plays a fender bass through a fender 1x15 amp... He uses the line out to get to the bose. Although it is very crisp and clean, one thing we may need help with is pushing more frequencies through the B1's... I feel that the P1 is taking too much responsiblity, but regardless... it sounds good.

My rhythm guitar player uses a Mesa Boogie, only as a preamp (otherwise you may mess up your stage volumes, as we learned from trial and error). He has only one b1 unit, and for a guitar, that's all he needs... the bottom end provides that ground shaking, face melting, goosebump rock n' roll tone that we've all grown to love.

As for my guitar, I went out and bought a Vox Tonelab SE floor unit... It has a cabinet modulator that is out of this world. Despite some bad reviews, if you know what you're doing, the Vox unit can produce some of the best distorted channels I've ever heard... NOTHING beats a screaming lead through this foot pedal, going STRAIGHT into the bose system (and a B1)! It is crisp, clean, and provides a cut that allows me to be heard ALL OVER the bar (I got a comment from a buddy of mine who was in the bathroom and still heard my "Crazy Train" solo loud and clear, as if he was right in front of the stage). One thing I noticed is to keep your amplifier on a low level, and really crank the Bose speakers... This allows for a really dynamic "cut" on my guitar, without any background noise... it really elimates that "freight train noise" that will drive an audience away.

Vocally, we all go through a mini Mackie mixer, which then runs to 2 of the bose units. This allows the vocals to cut through the music behind, and you'll never have that problem where the audience doesn't understand what the singer is saying... At first, I thought we'd need a vocal processor to get a decent effect on the mics... Definately NOT true! The presets on the Bose are perfect... All 3 vocalists in our group use Shure SM58's, and there is no need to buy anything more expensive with this units.

I'll say this about Bose... These 4 units give us the advantage over any other coverband in the NJ circuit (anyone from NJ knows how flooded the market is right now...) Sure, it was an $8,000 investment... but if you want to sound the best you possibly can, it's the only way to go. Besides, I really don't see these things losing value anytime soon...

Oh yeah... have some fun with them! Remember, a crowd has NEVER seen anything like this! Point it out to everyone! Let them KNOW why you sound soooo good!

This is a great example of how typically "we" don't hear uniform high frequencies throughout a room when watching a live performance. Even from behind closed doors there is more of an equal frequency response while using the Bose system, or at least better clarity without the muddiness. Sounds great! Classic guitar solo too Cool

Dave,
My guitar player also uses the Vox Tonelab SE in the same manner.....that unit paired with the L1/B1 is the solution he's been looking for for 6 years now. He can get all the distinct guitar tones for our huge variety of cover tunes, with amazing presence and clarity. Definitely not the "washed over" sound of some digital modelers that we've tried before. I'm sure you guys sound at least as awesome as we do! Big Grin

It's great to hear such a positive experience from a hard rockin' band! The Bose PAS isn't just for the acoustic set.

Also nice to read that you aren't compromising the system by using backline speakers or "outboard" powered subs. You are truly using it the way it was intended.

Glad to hear your drummer runs his kick direct into the PAS and not thru his mixer. It is a world of difference is it not?

Loved your website, looks like you guys have a good time and play good music (I'm a huge Sublime fan).

Looking thru all the pics i had to wonder what your ex-soundman is doing these days. Smile

Pete, Good Point... Not only does the Bose give the sound back to the musicians, it gives the $$$ back to the musicians as well! You no longer need to pay a sound guy! We're considering highering Roadies to carry our equip, and setup our equipment for us, so we can spend time before and after the gig on more important matters (drinking, our ladies, and drinking).

Holliwil: Great investment for your guitar player, as he already knows. It is truly an advantage over any other guitarist (in a flooded market like North Jersey, It is a selling point for your band...)

Speaking of, one other thing I've found... Make a write-up on your Bose package to intrigue bar owners, and give it to them with you're CD "package." Let them know why your band sounds better than any other band on the market. A lot of owners get SO curious as to what the is new system is, they will hire you just to hear it! It shows them that you are "something different," and not the same, ordinary cover band... If you'd like to see my write up on it, just email me... I'll send it to ya, so you can get an idea.

I see that you run vocals in stereo. I'm considering this as we only have one vocalist singing at any one time. Right now we have two units. One with a single B1 and one with two. Guitar through PodxT, harp miced, and vocals into unit 1. Keys & kick drum into unit 2. Bass still through Hartke stack though sometimes we take a line from bass head to unit two. Anybody else have good results with stereo vocals? We seem to need a little more punch with the vocals. But maybe the rest of us are just playing too dang loud.

Doc.

We have a blues band in Minneapolis with 2 PAS one with one B1 the other with two. I originally purchased a POD for the guitar player and it sounded incredible to me but he didn’t like it and wouldn’t even try to make it work. I purchase the Vox SE and he would even plug it in. Eventually at a rehearsal I took a balanced line out of his SWR Strawberry Blonde into my mixer and he almost passed out from the incredible sound. We run 3 vocals through a Mackie 1402 VLZ Pro, a Roland electronic drum kit direct into the side with one B1. My bass is either run through a PODxt or my Eden 550 and 1 or 2 112XLT Eden cabs with a line out to the double B1 side. The stage sound and crowd reaction is astounding! People just can’t believe the quality and a volume level that still allows for nearly normal conversation. Ballrooms or small club, it just doesn’t seem to matter. My set up time went from 1 ½ hour to about 40 minutes. Yes, I am very happy about every aspect of this system. Thanks!

Hi varius,
If chubb is busy..click on his link to their stage setup. It looks like they keep the systems behind them as intended. If they didn't, they would have to have monitors, which would defeat the purpose of the PAS system.

Varius,

Not stereo.....mono! These guys are just mixing down the vocals into 2 units so the harmonies can be well blended. But you really can get away without doing this because it's so easy to hear the mix onstage. We just run everyone's instrument and vocal into their own PAS unit (no effects, no amps onstage). We find that it's a great way for the audience to localize performers, and the harmonies still remain very well blended.

Haven't heard from these guys in a while, but they are still gigging after looking over their website (at the following url)

http://www.chubbrock.com

varius, your interest in the system leads me to think you might benefit from a demo. There are people on the forum from all over the country that can show you the system, and it is also available at Guitar Centers. Where are you located?

hello varius,drumr holliwil et al.
one fo the regular gigs my 3 piece plays is on a
stage with no height to put the pas,so we used it in front of me about 4 feet away.since that i have no qualms about useing it this way.in many places we do it is not possible to place the pas behind us,however.it works just as well
in other positions re the musicians location.and recently i had my gig from hell scenario.with the crowd (audience)literally knocking the mikes against our teeth.and solidly
packed around us.in this case i had height so put the pas on a table beside me.with some careful gain and mike angling we got through it
successfully,i cant think of any pa i have had
(many and various) that would have been better.
i love the pas and want another
thanks
damien
