Our church uses 4 L1's each Sunday. We have a full band for the music portion of the service - acoustic guitar, keys, bass, v-drums and electric guitar. Our usual guitar lead electric player was out last Sunday so the bass player had a friend sit in with us. He had never played live with an L1 and only had 1/2 hour to rehearse prior to the service. To his credit, he's an amazing guitar player.
I had warned him in advance that ideally he would not use an amp. He came in with a small amp and when I asked about it, he said, "I just want to use this as a reference". Then he pulled out a POD XT Live... I smiled, knowing the sound would be great and I told him with a grin - believe me, you'll have NO problem hearing yourself. Amp was not used or missed. He had been playing mostly with in-ear monitors recently and remember, he hasn't been around here in the musician's forum hearing all the things we discuss. He said he felt like he was isolated, playing in a tin can, and that what he heard through the monitors hindered his playing because he didn't know what the audience was hearing. So we played our 5 song set. I had warned him it might seem a little odd with the sound coming from behind him. But he jumped right in and did an outstanding job. Dialed in the Fender Strat preset to match his guitar and it sounded amazing to me. But when I asked him what he thought, he had nothing but good things to say. He could hear himself and others well and he was very enthusiastic. Love it when a new person sees the light. It's so much fun to see someone finally get out of that can isn't it? I'm excited for you John, that you get to be the one to lead him out of the dark ages. Turning folks on the the L1 has been a blessing (as well as a struggle) for so many of us. The payoff is sweet. NPI |
