This was a state of the art sound system. Same principle as the L1 only bigger. It wasn't meant to loud. It was meant to act just as the L1 does. A lot of people don't know this but the dead were very much ahead of the curve as far as sound systems and audio advancement. This is early 70's I think.
Most of this info is further up in this thread, and elsewhere on the forum, but, at least at one time, this was their live setup that they used everywhere.
In fact, they had two complete systems (trucks and all). One they used at the gig and one drove ahead to the next gig and started setting up a few days prior to the following gig. Eventually that became too expensive to do.

Oh, I remember the "Wall of Sound"! Got to see the band at University of Montana, in Missoula, around '73 or '74 - they set up in the college gymnasium and I think they only used "part" of the full rig -
I recall being quite embarassed for the Dead; the Montanan "cowboy" ethos was running rampant, fueled by 1/2 gal pitchers of beer. The boys played "Tennessee Jed", to catcalls of "this is Montana; go on back to Tennessee"! Oh dear, oh dear... I thought I saw Jerry (who was clean shaven, only time I ever saw him that way!) look back toward "the wall" and motion "up" with his head - and after that, I could not hear the fellow next to me say a word, let alone any catcalls! I loved it! Wanted to say something like "You asked for it!" but no one could hear me anyway... Great memories, GREAT sound system! Thanks for the reminder, Rick!
Must have been a nightmare finding a blown driver in 'the wall.' Between the moving, the capital investment, and the maintenance, no wonder they went broke with this system!
The Dead... lads, we miss you!
