...."The first to amplify the guitar...it brought a whole new sound to music..that was before it was ever done...
He didn't intend it to be used with such volume...just to be heard in a band, where the guitar up until that time was a soft, romantic background accompanying a singer..after that it become sort of an integral part of an orchestra".....

When I read this it made everything come full circle for me. Sounds so much like what we all talk about, like about & understand about the L1....But wait...this is talk from the 1930's
Today I learned about Alvino Rey...(thanks to the VG-99 users group who turned me on to him).
I would like to share this phenomenal video of a song called St Louis Blues.
it was way beyond its time.... wonderful song arrangement, multiple instrument solos, the effects he made on the steel guitar are as good as modern day synth sounds, even a 'talk box' with a ukulele-puppet as a prop...so original it just makes you smile......('He used a carbon throat microphone wired in such a way as to modulate his electric guitar sound. The mic, originally developed for military pilot communications, was placed on the throat of Rey's wife Luise King (one of The King Sisters), who stood behind a curtain and sang along with the guitar lines. The novel-sounding combination was called "Singing Guitar", but was not developed further'.)
here is the video..enjoy....

That was awesome!
I had no idea they could do that kind of robot vocal effect back then. I'm sure it was much more difficult than clicking on a plug-in.
...and steel guitar...in a big band?? Never seen it.

This from a friend of mine, to whom I forwarded the video. From Wikipedia.

Singing Guitar

In 1939, Alvino Rey used a carbon throat microphone wired in such a way as to modulate his electric guitar sound. The mic, originally developed for military pilot communications, was placed on the throat of Rey's wife Luise King (one of The King Sisters), who stood behind a curtain and sang along with the guitar lines. The novel-sounding combination was called "Singing Guitar", but was not developed further. - Bruce

That is a seriously white version of that classic song.

The guitar solo is just killer.
