I haven't had to try to use the L1's in this situation yet, but thinking about the Acoustic 'jams' topic got me wondering about how one might use the L1's in a true "theater in the round" ... where the audience is surrounding the performers.
[* Caution: speculation and conjecture follows ...*] I suppose, in some ways, it would depend on the size of the venue. For a smaller 'in-the-round' venue, I could envision three L1's, back-to-back like a trefoil (facing out, angled 120 degrees to each other). The musician, with wireless connections, of course, would then wander around the central stage. While 2 L1's back-to-back might do the job, 3 would probably be optimal for coverage ... and (in this case) all 3 would be fed the same signal(s). More than 3 would probably overlap their sound fields too much and cause excessive "phasiness" (uneven sound in the audience). If there were more L1's available for multiple musicians, I'd probably still cluster them in 3 identical groups, 120 degrees apart (with each person's signals getting 'triplicated' to one of the L1's in each grouping). In a larger 'in-the-round' venue I'd probably connect the L1's in the same identical groupings of 3, but distribute them around the outer edge of the "stage" area, so the musicians are monitoring the "backside" sound of the L1's. The sound in the middle would probably be the "worst" of the whole venue, but I suspect it would still be much better than conventional monitors -- and would allow the volume to get really loud. In that "large ring" of L1's, I would also get long cables for the B1's and put them all in the middle -- or, probably cleaner, would be to attach a single B1 close to each L1 (to get the right EQ), then wirelessly take the Bass Out lines to a bunch of Packlites and B1's clustered in the center ... maybe even summing all the Bass-out lines before feeding the Packlites. That would be the equivalent of having a drummer's kickdrum mic sharing a B1 stack with a bass guitar. Of course, if it were a venue with steeply angled seating, such as large pro 'football stadium' (not to be confused with a small high-school football field), the L1's would not have the vertical projection required to reach up into the stands, even tilted. In that situation, custom-rigged columns of MA12's would be great (e.g. L3.0 -- a stack of 6 MA12's!). However, a small football stadium might very well be covered by 4 to 6 tilted L1's in the middle (depending on if the 'end-zone' areas are used for seating). ... I can see it now ... 4 carts with L1's on them racing out to center field to feature the local jazz band during the half-time show... |

I was just having this conversation with Evan in Illinois at the Conference. I always thought it would be cool for a live instument dance band thing where you are trying to entice the audience to do something. It would take the right venue to allow you to do it.
Cool stuff. |

Something like this was done with 2 L1 systems on the German Forum by Wolfgang (Black Forest Man) for a parade. He had nearly 360 degrees coverage by placing the systems back to back. You can see pictures here:
