Rebecca. We missed you!!!

BBE...Gavy.

The shot above is on the Tuesday morning. None the worse for wear.

Would you know that we've all had four hours' sleep for the last three nights?

There are two people that somehow I did not get any shots of and it's a shame.

Roy and Martha.

(Does anyone have any photos of them?)

Roy was a very active and enthusiastic participant in all of the discussions and had many good points.

He went to heaven on Monday night during the last jam (he played his pituty off) when he strapped on that big bad Lakland bass and plugged into the 4 x B1 rig, saddled up, and rode. He's a great, great player.

One of the biggest surprises for me was walking into the Geneva Hall after the jam had started and hearing this big, soulful, woman's voice. I'm thinking: who is that???

As I walk through the door I see Martha at the piano, head back, wailing away. Ho ho! A ringer!

Well, it turned out to be even better than that. Martha turns out to be a superb professional musician -- a great piano player and singer -- but even more than that, someone who can anchor a group because she's such a good ensemble player. I loved the way she laid out when that was the right thing, provided need structure on a tune that was a little unfamiliar to some (she knew 'em all -- COLD) and play beautifully but never showboating when she was asked to solo. To me, she's the kind of player that anyone would want in her band.

Roy, you're a lucky man.

Martha. You go.

Ken

I was very impressed with both of their Vocal and Playing abilities. I listened to Roy's CD on the way home and played it a bit during breaks at my ParrotHead gig (Wed night). I introduced it as from my wonderful new Bose Conference friends and a Hot new group out of Savanna GA. Folks loved it Roy. I'll see if we can move a few down here for you.

As I listened, I heard the song you performed for us, "I waste away the day". It imediately brought me back to "Little Switzerland". How Cool.
As I listened to the CD more, I could hear Martha on keyboards and vocals.
Roy - you are one lucky guy, she is great.

If it weren't for the distance, I would sharpen up my Bass skills and be your groups Bass man anytime.

Well, Ken,

This thread was the next best thing to being there. Amazing photographs and captions. Thanks for taking the time to bring back a small (quite large, actually) piece of the conference to share with the rest of us.

Ken -
You're the man! These photos are among the best I've seen and really capture the vibe of the conference! WOW...that's all I can say...

John
P.S. I got a pretty good one of Roy (I'll post it in a bit), but didn't get one of Martha...I wished I'd had my camera with me on the late Monday night / early Tuesday morning jam...shucks!!

Re: Bose conference May 2008 / Switzerland, NC

As an avid Bose L1 convert (formerly two powered JBL EON 15s for mains & two 10s for monitors), I encourage anyone, given an opportunity, to attend these events. My personal enthusiasm for performing live and my energy level (life force) both have been greatly enriched, even a week after the experience.

To note some high points to those previously mentioned by others / in mostly random order:
[I missed Sunday & arrived Monday morning]

1) Eve. For her wonderful persona, beauty, verve and wit. She, as many inferred, is a sparkling gem!

2) Ken Jacobs. For his unbridled enthusiasm, insight, selfless leadership, communication abilities and wisdom. A remarkable & fun person...

3) Tom Munch. His un-amplified, solo performance of Carolina-in-the-Pines was absolutely magical. More on TM later. [Fabulous person; brilliant musician]

4) Rick Jordan (plus, John & Pete). For his amazing Jerry Reed/Chet influenced guitar expertise. He (rwj), John Nell & Pete (Drumr) were phenomenal performing together. Rick ran his Taylor 426 (mahogany/red cedar) in stereo through two L1s (model II), with a dual jack input: Taylor ES paired with LR Baggs. One side had a touch of Chorus & the other was dry. It sounded so clear and balanced; and being controlled by Rick's tempered, skilled dexterity, it was pure delight. John was super solid & entertaining on his upright NS bass and Pete was THE master percussionist with brushes, although he should consider upgrading his trashy gear.

5) Chris's talk on psycho-acoustics was fabulous. Deep content presented in easily understandable terms, with excellent examples and a well-prepared progression and impassioned delivery. Awesome!

6) Colonel Andy's effective use of the Variax was great. Good song choices too. And man - what subtle emotion purveyed from that wonderful baritone voice. (Very special wife too.)

7) Roy's slide playing on Statesboro Blues & his harp solo's at the late night jams. Also, his solid bass playing at the late night/ early AM jam. I cracked up after we followed his familiar riff into "Play that Funky Music", only to be told when it ended that he had intended Sly Stone's "Thank You For Lettin' Me Be Myself".
[Roy- Love your CD. Mr. CEO, Sir.]

8) Everything Nathan (BBE). Smooth. I'm thinking Broadway. Superior job of accompaniment by Tom Munch.

9) Martha (See Ken's comments). Her wonderful piano on "Your Song" made it very easy and inspiring for me to sing. She has a great ear and fabulous timing. She & Roy together are total charm.

10) Playing Brown Eyed Girl reggae-style and morphing into "Lion Sleeps Tonight". Singing harmony with Tom Munch on the "wee-om-mom-away"s.

11) Hearing Joel rehearse a couple of cool songs in the wings of the main hall, while he played the loaned Takamine . He was so relaxed & into it - I just had to stop & listen. Glad I did... Joel is a really good bass player too.

12) Bill & the Porchboard folks, Nadine & Dean - so entertaining & sincere. Great product.

13) Cliff Henricksen & his 4-piece snap, crackle, pop band. 4 L1 systems - used as designed - with dynamics & clarity galore! Each player was excellent. Check out the video post of "Life of Crime". Thank God for Cliff, his vision and creation. What a humble, talented & deserving person.

14) Mike Z's enlightening ensemble presentation.

15) Steve Skillings for his comments throughout & for a special reprise synopsis of his electric guitar workshop (which I had missed). He was talking my language! Thanks Steve.

16) Trading licks & jamming with Larry (Gitarzan) Myers. He was absolutely great. Fun guy too.

17) Dan Cornett's GEM keyboard presentation & performance. Stunning and inspiring.

18) Wiek - at Bose Europe. Certainly his sax, but also his fantastic impromptu whistle solos. I can whistle pretty good too, but both he and Tom Munch are spectacular whistlers.

19) Gary (Ethel M) for his steel drum simulations and excellent bass playing with Cliff.

20) Tommy for the "Alcohol" song on solo guitar.

21) OLDGHM - for his tips on the veranda about L1 & T1 optimization and song repertoire. I appreciate his understated intelligence. Good, likeable guy.

22) Pete (and Julie) - Drumr was great in all settings. He encompassed so many great musical qualities and would excel in any situation. Played and sounded top-notch. Also, Julie is sweet and genuine beyond words.

23) Neil-at-Bose - Thanks for all your help. What a gentleman.

24) Tres - Great to meet you. Thanks for your recording tips. Sorry I missed your performance on Sunday.

25) PmP (Mike) & Ray - You guys are great. Loved the "Granny" song & really enjoyed playing "Hands to Yourself" with you. Best wishes.
-------------------------------------------

In essence: This conference was a fantastic experience for me. It was just great.

As Tom Munch said: "It's all about the music, right?" Simply, the L1 systems are marvelous tools to help allow that music to flow. I am so grateful to use them. It's just so much fun!

Thanks to all you wonderful people at Bose Live Music group and to the L1 forum community. I now can say firsthand - you really are the best.

Was really nice meeting, hearing, and jamming with you in Lil Switz.
I second that opinion on Roy & The Circuit Breakers CD...it's great!
Those of you who picked one up, be sure and give it a listen very soon.

John I sell them and I would like to thank whoever put the 20 bucks in the till. I wasn't asking for money but as I thought about it I know it was meant as a kind gesture. Thank You - Roy. Martha is talking about that weekend. She was pumped.

Mike,

Anytime you want to talk electric guitars and L1's you just let me know ... you may have to tell me to knock it off, that you've had enough. Big Grin

It's a subject close to my heart and I've done everything from one pedal connected to an L1 on a stage too small for one person, never mind a band all the way to assisting Steve Miller on his HUGE stages. L1's and electric guitars were made for each other in my opinion.

Nearby were about ten specimens of the rare Trillium flower.

Can you believe how beautiful these are?

They only last a few days so we were really, really lucky to find them.
