That's a good idea. ST will probably be using up some of their bandwidth to upload things here during the 3 days in Lit'l Switzerland. I'd hate for us to be known as the folks who broke their Internet access, right after they got it installed, by passing files among ourselves via their wireless network. Wink

I'm booked in, arriving Saturday night. It's possible my whole band may come also. This is in progress. I met GW Jenkins, bassist and singer, at the Ashland conference. Vague, but I think I probably hooked up with Tom Beier, now an L1 marketing and sales specialist (drums and vocal, and choir director) at Ashland too. I met our guitarist/singer Tom Yates (3 time winner of GC's "King of the Blues") thru GW.

If this happens, I'm hoping we can play a set off the new CD. If so I'll bring a Nord Electro.

No matter what, I'll bring my GEM RP-X piano module and run it off the Korg 88. Should I put this on the wiki, ST? Very good grand, juicy Rhodes' and nice Wurlitzer. I'm just starting to sculpt with this and might do a TM preset or two for it.

These events are dear to me, beyond all the amazing and sweet social events and interactions. At Big Sur, I was reminded in a very truthful manner by David Schiffman, that "like it or not, you're a musician" so, get out there and play. Honestly, this "little" conversation was pivotal for me and I would not have this band assembled today if it didn't happen.

I will be doing some custom TM's 4uze like in Kookaratcha if there's room in the schedule. Everyone liked this, including observers. Also, I'm considering organizing a workshop on how to make your L1-based musical services enterprise more valuable. Well, if you do it right, it is more valuable, so how can you use this fact to get paid better? Like, how can we make fair wages for what we do. Model: Shop rate for a car mechanic is $65 per hour. Is music as valuable as this? Not sure about this yet as I'm not a real authority on it, but I may have something brewing from someone who is. Spend 5 hours on the gig (travel, time at the venue, etc) and make $300 each player.

Great news Cliff. Just getting to see/hear your band would be worth the trip.

I think that musicians wages are probably based on what similar gigs in the area pay. I recall an old post on this board about places where the musicians pay to play. Red Face It would be an interesting discussion.

Respect

Hey Cliff

I am really looking forward to seeing you again. What a treat it will be to hear the band live.

And yes, any discussion about finding or re-establishing the value in what we do would be welcomed in my book.

And please add your notes to the wiki page

thanks!

Cliff,

I LOVE this workshop idea! Any chance of tying this in with your recording & the thoughts that Chris started on THIS thread?

I see Steve Skillings on the attendee list now on the Wiki - all right! So Steve, are you up for showing off some electric guitar options for tone as Larry was hoping for?

Steve answered over on the Friday Night Lecture thread.

Finally I will be attending a conference. Wohoooo! Even if nobody else comes, I will be there. Big Grin

I've had a streak of bad luck trying to get to one of these but for this one I'm good to go.

See you there,
Steve

PS I've volunteered to discuss guitar amps and L1's if there is interest.

I'm up for hearing your thoughts on electric guitar tone, Steve.

Here is a little bit about the people at PorchBoard.

"We were performing musical assemblies for elementary school-age students and could not keep their attention with 'just a guitar'. Children want/demand/prefer/enjoy low-end REAL percussive rhythm. We needed something, there was nothing, so we got busy and made our own."

The best part is why they are doing the musical assemblies. Click the picture to read about "Choices" - A Drug Abuse Prevention Elementary School Assembly Program.

Agenda idea I wanted to throw out there...

"Mixing for the ensemble with L1's"

Using Cliff's band as the 'example band' Cliff and I can talk about mixing different instruments in a full band context. The focus will be on making your live show sound like (and better than) a great multitrack studio recording. Some topics we can cover are placement in frequency, stage/audience volume, drum volume, vocal volume, physical instrument stage placement etc. Cliff's band will be up on the bandstand to give real time examples and play snippets with different settings. Hopefully this could include everyone walking up and around the bandstand to hear what each player is hearing in real time in a real venue. Sort of hoping for a loosely directed workshop type feel, lots of questions and examples.

Would anyone be interested in something like this that focuses on a full band situation?

Cliff, anything to add?

Mike

Yes, and in addition to that, I'd like to see/hear a "mixed systems" demonstration and discussion. Everyday, somebody new on the message board wants to know how to integrate his/her 1 or 2 L1's into a 4, 5 or 6 (or more) piece band which can't yet (or doesn't want to) give up tube amps and the like. I play in a mixed systems setting every time I'm out, and don't quite have it down. Generally good, but I know it could be better.

Also,

Classic/Model I integration with the Model II. I'm not looking for a comparison of the two units, but using them "in perfect harmony." Say, given x number of Classics and y number of Model II's, which voice goes to which system and why?

Hey Mike!

Wonderful.

While you mentioned that this focuses on a "full band situation" I see a great applicability of the concepts and practices to smaller ensembles too.

MikeZ & BBE,

I find these ideas brilliant & very worthwhile. We could spend our time just on these.

We could both of these. I think the community as a whole is the foremost authority on integration with traditional systems. Any one of us could lead a discussion on it.

Steve-at-Bose is going to do a discussion on guitar tone, which sort of touches on some of these issues.

For model I versus model II we could put them up side by side and do a real A/B listening like we do here when we are designing products to highlight the similarities and differences between model I and model II. I think that would answer a lot of the questions on how to use them best when deciding what to put into what...and then take questions from there.

How does that sound?

Sure. I wasn't thinking A/B testing, per se, but it does make sense. I guess that would be the place to start. Yep, yep.

The various topics, here, are going to segue nicely into each other, it appears.

A month out from an early morning departure... Smile

We're a month out now. I don't remember having this many great ideas this far out before. I'm looking forward to what things we decide on. This is almost becoming a Summit of sorts.

Sorry, I've been out of town and away from my computer...

Great to hear that Cliff and his band will be in attendance! I also look forward to (finally) meeting ST, Tom and so many other forum regulars who have helped me along the way.

This should be a great conference. Not sure that my band qualifies as an "ensemble" but we are a large group, 5 musicians and 2 singers, and I'm looking forward to sharing my Bose experiences (and difficulties) with other L1 users. See ya all soon!

Hi Everyone,

I'd like to thank EVERYBODY for making such wonderful suggestions for the agenda.

I think I've been able to incorporate most, if not all of the ideas.

Here then is a preliminary agenda. I'm sure I've gotten some things wrong here and I'm depending on you all to help me make any necessary revisions.

Please also feel free to ask presenters to add more detail if you'd like it.

This is really shaping up to be something incredible.

With best regards,

Ken
