All,

I think we are at critical mass here.

Before we confirm, I'd like to have Eve-at-Bose who's a skilled event coordinator, among other things, just place a phone call and ensure that the basics of hosting us are in place.

OK FOLKS.

WE ARE THERE.

Eve called and the news is very, very good.

I'm going to have more details for you this afternoon.

Please plan on calling the Inn for room reservations very soon.

(The RV is welcome.)

(There is a building that has a common room and eight small sleeping suites for "motorcylcists" that looks divine and is very economical.)

This is so, SO EXCITING!!!

Ken

OK. Here are a few more details from Eve.

quote:
I am SO excited for you guys. This place is a real gem. Thanks to John for finding it. I've read through the message board strings about the expectations, and had a great conversation with Gary, the manager. He had an excellent idea. If you look at the overhead map, you'll see the main building (#10) and across from that another building, which is the "Breakfast/Lunch Building, #12+13. He said he'll let you guys use this room for free for your performances. It's actually 2 35'x36' foot rooms that used to have a wall between them, but the wall got knocked down, and there are some bathrooms built at either side, so that the opening is only 16' wide, but he said he uses it as one big banquet room (35'x72'). There are mountain views from these rooms, and the ceiling is 10' high (with lights that hand down to 8' in places). He mentioned that lives right down the road and has salsa bands play in these rooms for parties for his wife. His son is a waiter there. I told him that you guys are not the "take care of me" types, and that you'd probably be getting your own coffee.

There is a good variety of rooms and prices. For those who want to save money and go more rustic, there is #19 (Edelweiss) which has 8 bedrooms for $50 each. The A-Frames are so cute, and there are more apartment type accommodations. He said that you can take $20 off whatever rate you see on the site. Right now there is no one else booked there. Wouldn't it be great if you had the place all to yourselves! And, if others show up, they can just enjoy your music. Gary is cool.

Someone might want to contact Bill Szymczyk to find out more about the acoustics of the room Gary is offering. And, you'll definitely want to invite him. Maybe he'll bring some of his musician friends to join you. Let me know if there's anything more I can do to help with this. Eve

PS - RV's are fine. He has a space with electric and water hook up, but not sewer.

Here is the info Eve was trying to give us about Bill Szymczyk.

quote:
Bill_Szymczyk

Bill Szymczyk (pronounced /ˈsɪm.zɪk/) (born February 13, 1943 in Muskegon, Michigan) became a musical producer and technical engineer of rock working with, among others, the Eagles in the 1970s. He produced The Who's 1981 album Face Dances, which included the hit single "You Better You Bet". He also produced B.B. King, Dishwalla, Joe Walsh, Wishbone Ash, Michael Stanley, The J. Geils Band, The James Gang, Tom Kimmel, Ford Theatre and many others. In 2007 he produced and mixed a self-titled solo album from former Verve Pipe lead Singer Brian Vander Ark which is slated for a January 2008 release, and starting in 2008 he will be producing the debut album from Eyes In The Attic. He now lives in Little Switzerland, North Carolina with his wife Lisi Szymczyk and their two sons Michael and Daniel.

Eve's notes are now in the wiki.
South Atlantic States L1® Conference 2008

I noticed that when John Sweet spoke to Jack at the Switzerland Inn he was told that "They discount the rooms (with a booking of 20 or more rooms) $30 on weekdays. (Sunday - Thursday)."

Eve got this from Gary, the manager "He said that you can take $20 off whatever rate you see on the site."

It would be good to get some clarity around that.

I just finished booking a mountain view lodge room @ $110, after the $20 discount.
The music room, Geneva Hall is free now, isn't it?
Originally, it was costing us, so it works out.

Yeah, but that's totally contrary to what was originally publicized. The weekday (Sun - Tue) was $110 before $30 discount, so $80 was more attractive. Oh, wait, that was for a booking of 20 or more wasn't it?

I looked much deeper. I don't know why I couldn't see prices on their site before. So, I guess the most current pricing is on the site?? Pete, did they clarify it all when you called? Is your rate/discount what is to be expected - the "official Bose-attendee price"?

Thanks,
N

If you click on *Rooms* it takes you to a page with pictures of individual areas, from there, click on a building to get prices for that room/cottage. Price for the Lodge is $110, but it's an upcharge to $130. for "Mountain View" rather than the view of the courtyard & complex.
After driving that distance, I want a view!

Hey Tres...Thanks for getting this thing started in the first place!
...and John, many thanks and one humble apology.
After looking at the pic of Geneva again, and this time imagining it full of friends and music, it looked totally different.

Drumr, no need for apologies. What would this place be if we all had the same opinion about everything? Smile

As for the rates, you may not be seeing discounts that would come with a group rate. Hence the difference between what the web site says and what was posted earlier. I don't know - just a thought.

Should we book rooms for Tuesday night or will this event end early on Tuesday? Is there a schedule yet for what will be happening? Thanks Roy

Hi Roy,

We'll end by Tuesday mid day.

We'll start Sunday late afternoon, have dinner, maybe have an address, then rock (and folk, and jazz, and, and and...).

Hey Ken - The wife and myself just booked an A-Frame. We are bringing the dog. I can count on you to walk her twice a day and let her lick your face right? Eek

Ken has prevailed upon me to give a talk at the conference on psycho-acoustics, which is a buzzword for "how we hear stuff". He remembers some talks on the subject that I gave long ago to non-technical audiences. Actually, musicians already have a better foundation for understanding this stuff than the general public does.

Should be fun. I'll start dreaming up some props.

Hey Roy,

That's great! Yeah, I'm a dog guy. Face licking is ok. Walking is okay too.

Can't wait to meet you.

I just got off the phone with Alex (who does reservations) at the Switzerland Inn.

Rates
She *is* taking $30 off / nite for accommodations for people in "the Bose group".

And

Internet Access
They are having wireless internet access installed on their site on April 15th. This should cover most of the site including the Mountain View restaurant (this is the combined buildings 12 & 13 Eve-at-Bose mentioned).

And

Cell Phone
Alex assures me they have good cell phone coverage.

So it looks lovely and rustic, but no one needs to be off the grid unless they choose to be.

(Some of you may remember wandering around the high ground at Big Sur trying to get a signal).

I'm going to close out this thread as it is the thread that led successfully to the conference. I've started two others in this forum, one on agenda, and the other on logistics.

Feel free to start other threads as needed.

Thanks!

Ken
