Anyone else want to go on the Sunday morning hike? I guess we need to get at least one map. Ken or any of you folks who are not going to the Sunday church service - do you want to go for a stroll in the woods?

[edit - forgot a word - it's early]

I see on the wiki that we should have an organizer & a starting time & place. O, have you hiked this area before?

Just to note that I will move the service time around for those wanting to do both.

That's great that we can do both. I suspect that some of this may not come together until Saturday night, but if anyone has ideas I'd like to have some idea before then.

Tom -
I am planning to do some photography in the woods while there and thought perhaps Sunday morning might be a nice time to accomplish it, depending on weather. Also, depending on when you depart for the hike, I may tag along, at least for a portion of the hike, looking for some nice waterfalls, etc. I'm probably only good for about a mile out and back, though. If you are planning a longer hike, or a more 'advanced' hiking trip into the mountains, I'll be there to cheer you guys on, but that would be beyond my goal. (I'm also thinking about attending the Sunday morning services...just so many things to do and so little time!)

Thanks, Larry! I'd say any of the three look good to me. Anyone else?

Here's some more hiking info.

Grandfather Mountain

Grandfather Mountain Info

Relatively short, but incredibly fun and fairly strenuous hike from the top of Grandfather Mountain to McCrae's Peak. Spectacular 360 degree views from top of McCrae's Peak and Calloway Peak. Mile high swinging bridge at the top of the mountain.

Hike from the base is long and quite strenuous (over 1 mile of vertical).

Grandfather Mountain Trails

Grandfather Mountain Rates:
Hiking only from base: $5.00/person
Drive to top and hike from there: $14.00/person

Linville Falls

Beautiful waterfall area. Multiple trails from easy to moderate to strenuous. Great views on all trails. Free.

Crabtree Falls

I haven't been here, but it looks nice.

For those of you who sleep late I would be more than happy to organize a quick run to the restaurant before it closes for breakfast, or if that is to much be first in line for lunch. Roy Razz

Tom,

I have not hiked in the area. I am open to anything. Don't like making decisions, I will tag along wherever the group decides to go.

Larry,

What do you think about the start to finish time for the hike? When do you think you might be back to the Inn? Thinking about "church time", but still want to coordinate with the hike.

Thoughts from the hikers, please??

Nathan

I'm out all day today, then busy getting ready this evening. Early morning departure tomorrow.

It just depends how late we go Saturday night. We tried to hike earlier in Cuchara but couldn't get breakfast early enough. I think we hiked at 10:30 or 11:00, but the plan was for 9:00 or so. I wouldn't mind an 8:00 or earlier start time for the hike if we get to bed by midnight or shortly thereafter. I have a feeling that won't happen though.

Gotta leave pronto...

Perhaps we'll have an early service, then hike after. That may work better given these potential times. Okay, I'm gone.

When I am away from home I like to take advantage of all my time. I vote for an early morning worship and then an early hike. I plan on having bread and bologna just in case breakfast isn't available.

Not that I wouldn't enjoy eggs, sausage, biscuits and gravy.

Hey O...
If you have a couple slices of that white sandwich bread and a piece of bologna left over, I'll share my tomato with you...nothing better than a bologna sandwich with a big, juicy tomato slice for breakfast! I'll bring my combo salt/pepper shaker! Wink
