Nathan Carls & The upStandard Citizens is a 4 piece band.
I have been fortunate to develop a pool of musicians on which to call, depending on availability. While we play as a quartet primarily, it's not always the same quartet.

Notes about Nathan Carls & The upStandard Citizens
Seasoned professionals. I'm the youngest and least experienced, and the only L1 user. My combo is a really good example of a hybrid approach to using the L1. Very little of what I do requires a FOH PA system. So, with my L1 for my vocals (along with my custom preset thanks to MikeZ and Col. Cliff), Rob my bassist with his amp, and Terry on piano with his amp (no need to mic drums), it's a wonderfully-quiet, and well-blended mix. As beautiful an "instrument" as the L1 is, when the music is respected, each amplification method works well with another. Really, it's just barely more than straight acoustic in many circumstances.

Comments about the L1® System
They all like the clarity and simplicity of the system. Sometimes I get a little bassy, but that's more a mic technique, or vocal affection/affectation/...affliction? Wink I think they like that they can hear me well given the speaker is behind everyone. Of course, I can hear them, too, being right there in the thick of it. I'd love for the band to be all-L1, but as I said above, this is a really good example of L1 integration with more traditional approaches. And if we're all happy, why change it? Honestly, I'm tickled they're all willing to play for me. If they're set in their ways, so be it. It works...and works well.

Good stuff.

The sketch ST posted for us (Thanks, ST!) shows the basic set-up. Drums are always on the side and canted in a little. The piano is always opposite the drums and is turned in fairly severely as shown. The drums and piano may swap sides. This depiction is not absolute. Rob's position varies a little bit, but he's mostly up the middle, off one of my shoulers.

A note about amps other than the L1: Terry's (or Bill's if he's playing) is usually angled in towards the band. Terry also puts his on a chair or his gear cart...I think so he can hear it better (see note below). This can sound a bit hot on stage, or if right in front of it for an audience member sitting opposite the amp's angle. More out front, though, it's a nice blend.

Note on elevating keyboard amp:

I think part of this is also so the piano won't get lost bouncing among bodies and gear if sitting on the floor. Now here is where I can see a huge advantage to the L1, if he would use it. I don't press though. Like I alluded earlier, if everyone's happy, leave it alone.
