Hi Rory,
Thanks for posting this. Good to get to know you better. I was enjoying your demo tracks on your website. Were these live mixes? I really like how the the vocals are way out in front. Is that what you do live? Oh, I did some hunting around on your site but couldn't find an answer to this. Why are you called "Half step down?" I have a buddy to started turning all his instruments a half step down "'cuz I c'aint reach the high notes no mo" |

Hey ST,
The six individual audio demo songs on the website were not recorded live. We recorded the tracks separately on a Tascam multitrack. I then exported the audio to my computer for mixdown in Cubase LE. On the other hand, the embedded youtube videos on the website were recorded live back in January 2008 with a Sony Handycam. No external microphones were used, just the cameras internal mic. I had three original model L1s at that time. Two L1s in back of the band (instrument mix only) and one L1 off to the left side of the stage, slightly in front of the microphones (vocals only). The front Bose tower was pointing at a 45 degree angle towards the center on the dance floor. I did this so the band would have no problem hearing the vocals. I tell you what, we were playing extremely loud in demo video. With the vocals up front and instruments in the back; the Bose speakers will crank out some dBs with little feedback. We don't play that loud anymore. I found that audiences enjoy themselves much better when the music is encompassing but not painful. Currently, I have only two Model 2 L1s. That's plenty enough for 95% of the venues we play. Oh yeah, were did I come up with the name of the band? Well, like you I have trouble singing songs in their original key. So, for years I've tuned my guitars a half-step down to E flat. TaDa!! That's were the name came from... Now, the band itself does not play any songs a half step down because the lead singer (Drew) has a naturally high voice and hit those notes. Rory |
