Hi borderblasters,

Thanks for using The Sketcher!

This is just a quick note to send you a link to your Sketch in case you want to review it, edit it, or share it with others.

-- click image to make changes to the live version --

Codes:
Orange numbers are Systems and Inputs using those Systems.
Blue ringed numbers are Channels on the Systems.
Green numbers are for general notes about the Sketch and connections to non-Bose gear.

Quoting borderblasters from The Sketcher
quote:
We are a duo but we each play different instruments for different songs.

We both sing.

All acoustic instruments with pickups are currently going through an individual Boss EQ/Pre-amp before hitting the mixer. Might not be necessary with L1(?).

Musician #1 (Left side): Primary instrument is acoustic guitar (Martin D28) with Baggs pickup, but also plays '56 Gretsch through a tube amp, and piano.

Musician #2 (Right side): Primary instrument is acoustic mandolin using a bridge pickup for rhythm volume and a directional mic (green #1) for lead volume (would consider other options). Musician plays acoustic guitar on some songs. The Les Paul (green #2) in the sketch is a substitute representation for an solid body electric mandolin, currently being played through a tube amp.

Please tell us more about your music:

  • What kind(s) of music you play,
  • Where you do it (size, type of venue)
  • Who is there (audience) - how many, what are they doing while you are performing

Thanks

PS
Do you know the make/model or have a link to a solid body electric mandolin?

Something like this?

Hi, Hope my quoting comes through okay... Actually this sketch appeared from me trying to update an earlier sketch, but it's cool someone's looking. I was also just composing a longer post for, probably, the "Solo and Duo" forum. We've already taken delivery of an L1 system and are having a difficult time getting a sound we're happy with. It might be better to move the discussion over there but I'll answer your questions below.

Please tell us more about your music:

  • What kind(s) of music you play,

"Acousti-lectric Texas Roots Music", meaning our own styles of western swing, blues, bluegrass, real country. We're primarily acoustic in instrumentation.

  • Where you do it (size, type of venue)

    Small clubs, outside small stage.

  • Who is there (audience) - how many, what are they doing while you are performing

A very varied audience. Mostly a "listening" crowd however, over 30 years old. Sometimes we play for folks that want to dance too and we can dish that out just fine. Our ideal audience is a combination of listeners and dancers. We don't do a lot of bar gigs with heavy drinkers although sometimes you have to...

Thanks

PS
Do know the make/model or have a link to a solid body electric mandolin?

It's a 5-string solid-body Roberts Tiny Moore model, dual pickups. I have a 4-string solid body Stevens mandolin on order.
THANKS! Todd

There's also a photo of me on that site but you'll just have to look for it... hehe...

Go ahead and write your longer post wherever you want to put it. You can just quote this into is so we can all have all the details.

Great looking stage layout.

Please tell us more about your music:

  • What kind(s) of music you play,
  • Where you do it (size, type of venue)
  • Who is there (audience) - how many, what are they doing while you are performing

Then I can get back to you with some fairly specific suggestions for your stage layout.

Thanks!

Actually, we have tried so many scenarios that we are confused. We played outside in the summer and had to have the systems close together. Aside from feedback issues it worked pretty good.

Then we went inside and spread the system out. One side could not hear what the other side was playing. So we put them together but the horn players complained that the keyboard player and guitar was too loud.

So, then we added a mixing board to control the sound as a whole. The drums and bass turned to mud, and the vocals sounded like we were singing out of a can.

We then took the bass and the drums and plugged them in direct to the L1. That fixed that problem, but the vocals still sound terrible.

This Saturday we have a major casino coming out to hear us and I don't want to deal with the vocal problems so I'm going to try the sketch that I posted.
Do you have any suggestions before this Saturday?
Thanks,
Jimackmusic
