I use an iPod on stage to play my backing tracks that are sequenced then recorded and converted to an mp3. I am a solo act - play keys and sing. I also perform with a guitar player at times. I'm wondering what system might be adequate for an already wonderful sounding rig?

Hi Jetbon,
I'm a windplayer (trumpets and wind controllers) that among other things also does a solo act. I used DAT recordings of my own cds and other recording projects I had been involved with, for years. When the Apple iPod arrived, I made the switch to MP3 and have never looked back. Now that I have the Bose PAS, my solo act is light-years ahead. Ease in set-up, superior sound, low stage volumes that I know are able to carry throughout a room. Ideal for a solo act, in my opinion.

By the way - that would be one system, with single B1 module.

I'm also a solo player - whistles and windsynth, and sometimes keys. Love the PAS for the solo gigs! I'm running my tracks off of my laptop, but would love to slim things down more. How well does something like the ipod work for this, as far as set lists, etc.? And, how are you running things through the PAS as far as which channel for a mic, windsynth, and tracks, or do you use a mixer and send it to channels 1 & 2 (or 3 & 4)?

Thanks for the info - it'll be interesting to get some details from another solo player!

You could use channel 1 for mic, 2 for windsynth and 3 & 4 for IPOD left and right. I think there are some ipod users out there, I hope they chime in.

Hi... I do the same with Creative's Nomad JukeBox3. I play guitar and my wife does lead vocal. Nothing beats the L1 for this. The only thing we need now is another one, for Stereo.

I use a Nomad JukeBox 3 - 20 GB drive. I use a small Makie to do the mixing. There's no EQ on Channel 3 & 4, so if you have a tune that needs real time tweaking you can't do anything with it. I first used my synth rack... too big, then a CD (multi disk)... no AntiShock protection, then a portable... to much swapping, Then my laptop.... noisey outputs (and someone might steal it!) Ahhhhh... Then a CD bases Mp3 player... Excelent!... now as HD based Mp3 ... Ahhh I'm set Smile

I have a Nomad Jukebox 3. The output specs are impressive. I'd didn't get the Ipod cuz there are some limitations, and they cost more. I also wanted some of the controls on top cuz its akward to hold the guitar and pick up the timy mp3 player. I recomend the a small mixer so all you control is in one place. I use input 1 & 2 for overall tone shapeing. I' love preset 14 for full range music. One warning though!! Don't drop the Mp3 Player!!!

Hey Wayne-

The iPod works well on stage except for the random time here and there that you hit pause and it doesn't take because of the angle at which you touch the button or something - next thing you know, you're into the next song without a chance to regroup (pretty embarrasing)! But, the best way to circumvent that I've found, is to create like a 10 second "silence" track and put it in between each song in your playlist. The other thing I haven't done yet is "Playlist on the go", which will just run your whole set straight down rather than picking a tune after each tune. I'm going to try it tonight at my gig, so if you're interested, I'll let you know how it goes. Sometimes I think I'd rather have a laptop and just run my show from iTunes, but then I hear people say that they want to downsize even from a laptop, so, we'll see! I actually had problems with songs just stopping right smack in the middle (ultra-embarassing), but that hasn't happened since I cleared off the iPod, updated the firmware, and reloaded it. It's been a peach since. Also, I would stay clear of putting mp3's any bigger than 7 megs on it....the limit is 9 megs, but I still had problems. I can't wait to hear the PAS because that is just going to enhance how good the iPod sounds, even though it's got a number of eQ settings in it to pick from (i.e. Jazz eq, Rock eq, etc.) I think the iPod with PAS is going to be the end all be all!!

I plug my ipod into pas channel 2 using a 1/8" stereo to 1/4"mono conversion plug - that way I can eq it - hear that rumble in the alley Smile

Likewise...iPod user here, too. I've posted a bit about my setup in another area of the board. I'm with Klaus in that I use a 1/8" stereo to 1/4" mono adapter to get my iPod connected. I do my own tracks in my home studio, master them with SparkXL, then use iTunes to convert .aif files to AAC resampled @ 192kbps. The sound from my PAS system (L1 + PS1 + B1) is nothing short of amazing.

My Pod sits on my keyboard, right next to the LCD in the middle, so easy to reach & read. All I need to do now is get a little more practice time under my belt at hitting those iPod buttons correctly.

Best of luck!

Cheers!

Hi Jeanette,
I'm a singer in a band from Brisbane, Australia. I can tell you that we too have had exactly the same problems with our ipod. It seems the pause button takes a while to kick in (sometimes half a song) and by that stage we're well into the song we didn't want to do in the first place only to find that it stops. Luckily for us we have keys and guitar to finish the phrase of the song in a dignified manner. I really like the ipod despite the intermittent problem. We don't have the PAS here yet but I would love to hear it. If it does what it says it does it would be great for me as I drive a MINI! I would be interested in trialing one here as there are a few concerns I have such as loudness on stage in our ears and feedback if it is behind us. Also channels 3 and 4 not having any EQ and it not having a wider band of EQ.
COuld some one from Bose find out if it is poss to trial one here? I've asked my local Bose store and they know nothing!

I'm not claiming to know much about the iPod but I do know that those can be defragmented (at least the windows version). Maybe that would help?

I restore my IPOD from time-to-time (Windows: Start/Program Files/IPOD/Updater) and resync my music files. I have about 20Gb of music on mine, and after restoration all the functions work quickly.
