Hi
I've experimented with a few options for mic-ing my Border Pipes (bellows-blown bagpipes, similar but quieter sound to Highland Bagpipes). I used an SM57 for a long time but after some feedback issues I just switched to an Audix OM-5 mic. This seems excellent for feedback immunity and I really like the sound I get from the pipes, through a T1 (using the OM5 preset) and an L1. Much better than the SM57 in my opinion. I find that pointing the mic towards the chanter, roughly midway between the hands, works fine. I did experiment with a gooseneck clip-on mic but it seems very difficult to get a consistent volume from all the chanter notes (because of the physical spacing of the holes).
