Hey Folks,
I was playing a sunset cruise tonight in Key West, FL for a fun group of folks. (Parrothead cruised (Jimmy Buffett fans)) The sky got all crazy and it started to sprinkle and looked like it was going to pour.

I had a bunch of people offering to help me get my stuff below deck and under cover. I was packing up my guitar, mic, T1, etc. and a fellow grabbed the base to my L1 Model 2. I didn't see it happen but apparently he had a beer in his hand and dumped quite a bit of it into the hole where the tower fits into the base!

By the time I got below deck with all of my other stuff, he was mopping it out with a bunch of paper towels. I've got it in my hotel room to dry out. I plugged it in and the power light came on. It might be just fine but I thought I'd check here to see if there is anything I should do between now and show time tomorrow at noon. I have my Classic with me too so the show can go on either way.

Funny, with all of the people helping me, we got everything below deck before it rained only to end up with a beer in my Bose!

As long as it drys out it should be fine. it might smell and be sticky but it should be fine. Don't turn it on unless it is dry.

Hi Matt,

This was way back and Hilmar was talking about the Classic.

But it is the only advice direct from Bose that I could find.

The best way to deal with a beverage accident is to

a) Please, shut the system of immediately (liquid in the PS1 is a potential safety hazard)
b) If you have the opportunity poor clear water after the beverage (to rinse out sticky stuff)
c) wiggle a little to make sure all the water comes out of the drain holes in the bottom.
d) Let the system dry out throroughly for at least one day, several days are better

Hope that helps

Hilmar

And another one from Hilmar

Two of the most common failure modes are mechanical damage and liquid spills. The PS1 is quite rugged, but I have seen patients that where the metal input panel (which is solid steel) was bent with connectors completely ripped out, pressed in or more or less pulverized.

Liquid spills unfortunately do happen too. At one time, I played a wedding and one of the guests came up from the dance floor and put her drink right on my power stand !!!

The temptation is certainly there, but is should be avoided if possible. If it does happen, the best thing, is to shut off the unit immediately and disconnect the power cord. Pour some water after the drink (not too much at once, but more than the drink), before the original liquid has a chance to dry. The PS1 has drain holes in the bottom cover, so it will come out again. Then let the unit dry out thoroughly (at least 24 hours, 48 hours is better). That is not pretty, but it gives the unit a decent chance of survival.

In general, drinks and amplifiers don't go well with each other. I have seen a coke disappear in a little guitar tube combo which resulted in impressive fireworks. The master: Guitarist puts a vodka-orange in a plastic cup on top of a Marshall head. The heat of the tube melts the cup and all off a sudden unexpected pyrotechnics enlighten the show.

Hi Matt,

I recall seeing a Model II powerstand open at Lil' Switzerland. If memory serves me correctly all the circuit boards are suspended, so fluid entering through the L1 connection shouldn't get up to where the boards are.

If you got the liquid out and cleaned up the connections you will probably be OK.

It never hurts to think positive.

O..

The local tech at one of our music stores will take amps that had spills, and go outside with a hose to wash everything off. Let em dry out and a good percentage of the time they worked fine.

Matt,
Please keep us informed. I have not had this happen to a model 2, but have had it happen to a model 1 while it was running. I quickly turned off the unit I then turned the unit on its side and dumped the liquid out. I let it dry for a few days, turned it on...and it's been fine every since.

I used my L1 Model 2 all day Friday and Saturday and it worked just fine. It smells like beer but I think with some more airing out, the smell will go away.

I don't know the extent of the spill. The base was out of my hands for about 1 minute so I don't know exactly how much beer was spilled or where it went. But it seems like all is well.
