I recently purchased an L1 Model II double bass system. We used a friends single bass L1 system for our three piece band outside and it was good but he said it could have used a little more bass. (We use an upright englehart with realist pick-up)
Can I use a longer 4 prog speakon cable to place (about 15' to 20') the other B1 closer to the bass player to monitor and increase thier sound or is that going cause a problem.

Thank You, SKI

Yes, a longer SpeakOn cable can be used either in front of the first B1 or between the two of them. A couple of notes:

  • Be sure it is a 4-wire cable. The SpeakOn connectors are easy to unscrew and check to be sure it uses 4 wires, not just two (you can NOT tell by just looking at the connector itself). The B1's and L1 won't behave correctly with 2-wire cables. You might also check & tighten the wire connections, too, as long as you have the connector opened up.

  • Be aware that when you separate two B1's (connected to the same source) more than ~ the size of the B1 (>15" apart) you lose some additional "coupling" effects -- and will likely mean that you have to "turn up the bass" a bit more than usual to get the same "bottom" sound.

So, if I interpret your note correctly, your band will be using one Model II with two B1's -- correct? If so, I would not worry too much about moving just one of the B1's over next to the bass player. I'd keep the two B1's together -- and just make sure the bass player is at least 6-8' away from them. (Why? Because the B1's are really just 'conventional' speakers and if one is standing over them you are not hearing the "full effect" of the sound which you'll get by being further away from them.)

The longer cable, if you already have it, can still be quite useful. In some rooms you may find that the best position for the L1 column is also NOT good for the position of the B1's -- the longer cable will let you move the pair of B1's to other positions around your performance area without having to move the column. See this Wiki article on B1 Positioning for more very useful information.
