I have a six-piece Classic Rock Band: two lead vocalists; Electric/Acoustic Guitar(and vocals); Keyboards(and vocals); Bass; Drums. We have an L1 and two bass modules on one side; a second L1 with one bass module on the other side. We use a Mackie non-powered 16 channel mixer. We have three powered monitors, on the floor, across the front.

I have an opportunity to purchase another L1 with two bass modules. My thought was to put this one and its bass modules in the center of the backline. How would I connect it? The other two L1s are connected to the Main Outs of the Mackie.

Thank you.

Dan

Hi Dan,

If you had three L1®s you could look at setting up the stage as three zones (left, centre, right) and having an L1® for each zone.

If you have a couple of minutes - please try The Sketcher to show us your stage layout.

Then I can show you how you could do the connections.

Hello Dan,

You can connect the third L1 to one of the Aux Out. On your mixing board, you can freely send any channel to the third L1 by adjusting the Aux level.

Hi Dan,

I just found this old Sketch. Is this still applicable (except now you have two L1®s).

Legend:
Orange numbers are Systems and Inputs using those Systems.
Blue ringed numbers are Channel connections to/from the Classic and Model I Systems.
Blue filled numbers are Channel connections to/from the T1 ToneMatch™ audio engine.
Green numbers are for general notes about the Sketch and connections to non-Bose gear.

Notes:

1. The Taylor T5 will not use a separate amp; rather, it will do direct into the Bose Classic.

2. The bass amp will have a direct out to the FOH speakers.

3. The second guitar (Fender) has a direct out for the FOH.

4. The lead vocalist/conga player will have a stand mounted Mackie SRM150.

5. There will be two floor wedges for the rest of the band; I, of course, will not need a monitor, as I'm the one with the Bose Classic!

I just wanted to let you know that everything worked okay.

Just on a break (having a really busy night), so I'll have to get back to you in more detail late late tonight or tomorrow.

The guitar on the right is out. There are two keyboards. T5 changed to an Anderson Crowdster (not that it matters). Otherwise, it is representaive of the current setup. Just add an L1 and one bass module on the right side.

Using an Aux sounds doable.

Hi Dan,

Here is what I got from your description (except that I didn't swap in the Crowdster - don't have one to put into the picture).

Legend:
L1® Model I/Classic
Orange numbers are Systems and Inputs using those Systems.

Whether you use the Aux or wire things up directly, there is how I would route the signals.

Each source would be heard from only one L1®, the L1® closest (behind) it.

How does that look to you?

How does one side side hear the instruments on the other side?

Hi Dan,

Let's start with why you would want to have each source heard through only one L1®.

See: Localization

Then we can get into how/why this could work on your stage.

With the wide dispersion of the L1®s the people on one side should be able to hear the people on the other side just fine.

Sometimes I have to do some fine tuning by moving the L1®s in or out (toward the middle) and it's good if you have a deep stage.

The way this Sketch is drawn, the stage might be 10-12 feet deep. The vocalists are about 10 feet from their L1®s and maybe 15-20 feet from the other L1®s.

The difference in volume between 10 feet and 20 feet with an L1® is going to be about 3 dB, so you are going to notice the difference, but it's not much. So volume-wise you are probably okay.

With the wide dispersion of the L1® everyone should be within everyone else's sound field.

If there is an issue with that it might be because the Drums in the middle are louder than the L1®s. This can happen when the Drummer is trapped between two L1®s, and has to play loud to hear him/herself.

Then you can try moving the Drums to the side. This would let you bring the stage volume down and it will probably make it easier for everyone to hear themselves and each other better.

What do you think Dan?

Hi again Dan,

I'm hoping that you will get a lot more clarity for your lead vocalist on the congas firing straight up the middle.

Please let us know how it goes. I think it's been a year since we last heard from you.

Do you have a website for the band?
