Crossover Issues???

Hello ST and others,

Here is our situation. You know from the prior posts that we use two L1 M2's each with T1's.

We had been experiencing some crazy signal path issues as previously posted. Here is the new issue. Last week our regular drummer was out so we had another drummer fill in. For various reasons we tried to run him (his electric kit) through my t1 (channel 2) and into my L1. Trimmed the channel no problem. Went to turn the volume up and could not get it two more than 2 (9:00) without some kind of sonic feedback. Pushed for time, we put the drums back into the other L1 and T1 with no problems.
This week our regular drummer was back and we tried his electronic kit with the same results. Tried a different channel with the same results. So, again. We put him back into the other system and no problems.

At the end of the gig, we connected the t1 which was working fine (my partners T1) into my L1 to see if the problem stemmed from my T1. Same results with the high pitched digital sounding feedback. The t1 that was working fine all night was feeding back in my L1. We switched the cat5 cable to make sure that had no effect which it did not.

So we are fairly certain the problem is in my power stand. Today I update all the firmware in hopes that will help. I am taking my stuff to my partner’s house to see if the updates worked.

In thinking about this, since purchasing the unit, there have been some issues. Maybe they are all related. In one song, while singing a certain, higher range, louder n passage, my Bose shuts off very briefly. Always in the same spot always the same note. Very odd. All I want to add that my Bose seems fine with my bass running into it and with my vocals (except that one passage). I always tell my partner that his Bose sounds full and his vocals always seemed fuller.

Could all of this be a crossover issue stemming from the power stand? Have you ever heard of this?

Thanks ST for always being there to answer these questions.

Hi FolkU,

It sounds like you have done a good job of narrowing down the problem source to the Power Stand. If applying the firmware update does not help, then I would definitely call L1® Support. They will be around for a few more minutes today, and then back on Monday.

Call Bose® Product & Technical Support at (877) 335-2673 (U.S. and Canada only)
Monday-Friday: 8:30 AM - 9:00 PM ET
Saturday 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM ET
Currently no support available on Sunday

I can't recall anyone mentioning an issue like this, so that's why I think your next step is a (free) telephone call.

Wow, went over my partners house last night and set up the Bose. After downloading the new firmware update the squeal still happens when I plug the electronic kit. So, piece by piece we swapped out his components with mine to see if we could find the problem.
First we swapped out the power stand and the squeal was still there. We figured that proved it was the tone match causing the issue. So, we swapped out the tone match and the the squeal was still there.

So here is where we are:

T! PS Speakers Squeal

MINE MINE MINE YES
MINE PARTNERS MINE YES
PARTNERS PARTNERS MINE YES
PARTNERS PARTNERS PARTNERS NO
MINE PARTNERS PARTNERS YES

I am just posting as I think it is interesting. We even switched out cables to make sure that was not the problem.
Obviously I will call Bose Monday and get ready to put the components in the shop. Bottom line is that it appears that anytime either my T1 or speakers or used, the feedback occurs. I seems as if this only happens with drum brains. My bass seemed fine, vocal seemed fine (other than the one song which shuts the unit down if I push the vocals too hard (not clipping the unit according to T1).

Crazy. Thanks for all your help ST.

Hi FolkU,

I don't think your chart above, offers enough information to come to any conclusion. I feel there is something else unknown, yet to be noticed, that is causing your issue.

Troubleshooting can be tedious and confusing. Not being there, it is difficult if not impossible to say anything with certainty, but If I were you, my next step would be to reload all the factory settings into the T1.

Select the appropriate preset for the drum kit.

Carefully check the output level of the drum kit, and the input trim on the T1.

The following link should take you to a wiki page where you can find the directions and files to download.

http://toonz.ca/bose/wiki/inde...ginal_Factory_Scenes

I could tell a story of a time when I had a malfunctioning component that I spent days troubleshooting, took it to the dealer who found nothing wrong with it. Changed all connecting cables, cut up and made all new cables, finally purchased eight new factory made cables, to eventually discover that one bad cable end magically ended up on the same connection several times and even after being cut and the other end replaced it was reinserted into the same connections, still showing the same result. Freak accident and coincidence can be very frustrating at times. I hope this is something simple that you figure out quickly.

Actually, the system sqealed with my partners tone match, PS and my speakers. Does a factory reset affect more than just the T1 as the issue is there with either or both the T1 and speaker array.

This is part of what makes it absolutely unclear what the issue is.

Starting from scratch gives an opportunity to eliminate a setting on the T1 that could be an unknown culprit.

Chance and coincidence are often factors in hard to find glitches. A fresh start is a good thing.

The shutdown of your sound when singing a certain note is eerily similar to the early production T1's that would shut down when a certain note was played while the tuner was engaged. The latest updates fixed that glitch.

There is no shortage of possibilities, let's try to eliminate those that we can think of and readily attack.

Hi FolkU,

Got some sleep. Let's check something.

What version level is your T1®?

  1. Turn the Rotary Selector to Prefs

  2. Press the first button

  3. Turn the first button until you see Versions
  4. Press the button

  5. The versions for the firmware will be displayed. The versions shown below are sample values.
See:T1 ToneMatch® Audio Engine Firmware Updates for the latest firmware

  6. See:T1 ToneMatch® Audio Engine Firmware Updates for the latest firmware

Right now the latest T1® firmware is 1.8.

What have you got?

Notes: What version of the T1® Firmware do I have?

What version is your Power Stand?

  1. Turn the Rotary Selector to Prefs

  2. Press the first button

  3. Turn the first button until you see Power Stand

  4. Press the button

  5. The version is displayed.

The latest version is 1.3

If you don't have that see:

Hi FolkU,

Sorry - I missed that you mentioned that in an earlier post.

I'm stumped that the squeal is following your Speakers (Cylindrical Radiator® )

T1 PS Speakers Squeal

MINE MINE MINE YES
MINE PARTNERS MINE YES
PARTNERS PARTNERS MINE YES ***
PARTNERS PARTNERS PARTNERS NO
MINE PARTNERS PARTNERS YES

Yes, it was really weird. Thought we had it handled when we switched out the PS (mine for my partners) and still had the squeal. Figured teat "hey it has to be the T1". But after that we substituted my partners T1 and still got the squeal. We then tried his entire system and it worked fine. Substituted my speakers only back into the mix and squeal came back too. Very strange and frustrating.
