Gyorgy Kurtag and the pianist Marta Kurtag, his wife, made their New York debut in a concert of Mr. Kurtag's works and others at Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall on February 2nd.
The haunting, enigmatic sounds and unusual sonorities that floated through the hall...were partly achieved by the composer Gyorgy Kurtag Jr., who anticipated the pianists' intentions measure by measure with subtle changes in amplification.
They played a curiously thick and shiny upright piano, on either side of which were futuristic looking Bose speakers, two pairs each consisting of a short and boxy subwoofer (?) and a tall skinny round tower.
I really enjoyed reading the articles. There were some interesting insights into the compositions in the article in the Washingon Post.
"Kurtág is not a fluent composer, or even an especially articulate one. He has wrestled with music his whole career. A turning point in his early life was working with an art psychologist who recommended that he focus on setting himself simple, small, basic assignments, and his work has reflected this influence ever since. "
Back to the L1®s.
Do you know if there was a conscious decision made to go with the Model I's instead of the Model II's?
