Fascinating demonstration on the video of the week on Science Friday today at the top of the page on the left. (If you're looking for this later click on "watch more videos" & search for "Patterns Written By Sound"). Show some cool things about nodes.

I tried this experiment at home with my drums as a sound source and the sand kept displaying little 12 oz cans in a circle. I don't understand? I would like to know what frequency this is and how frequently should I attempt this again. Thanks for sharing Tom it was really interesting Thumper

Taylor did this to look at their guitar tops when they developed the ES system. They used lasers, but mapped the top of the guitar and found some very interesting properties which helped to make it one of the best pickup systems on the market.

Ohhhh ... this takes me back ... I remember graduate school physics class in which I was rather confused about the relationships between the sets of complex equations we were studying -- until the prof declared that those equations described the vibrational modes of a plate (... or a cylinder, or a sphere, etc...). Then they started to make sense.
Visuals are SOOOOOO much easier. |
