Big Sur Bose Bash - the final countdown : (hh:min approximate) to go (reload page for update).

Edit: The clock is now counting hours since we wound down the get together (approximately midnight Tuesday).

On Sunday night we started the countdown "Most of us will be getting to Big Sur in about a week. "

Here's the plan and some ideas.

The first session is Sunday night at the Big Sur Lodge
Big Sur Bose Bash Agenda / Set List
It's a plan but not a done deal. We'll be playing by ear as much as reading the score.

Colored bars are roughly proportional to the times.

Food / Special Needs
Please post here or send me a private message if you have any dietary concerns or special needs.

Things to bring or consider

  • Comfortable Clothes - nothing we have planned requires anything more formal.
  • Hiking gear (including rainwear, boots).
  • Charts / Lead sheets. If you are going to play and hope to invite others to join you, please bring these along if you've got them.
  • Band swag for swapping if you are interested in doing that with others.
  • Leave a little room in your luggage. You are not leaving empty handed. Watch for details over the next few days.

If you are planning on playing (you *are* aren't you!) please bring anything else you need or check with Joseph or ST to find out for sure if something will be available for you. See the post immediately following for a list of the gear that will be at the Hidden Barn.

If you have already confirmed that you are coming - please watch for a Private Message with this photo banner above within the next 48 hours.

edits:
- moved gear list to post below
- 'Leave a little room in your luggage'
- added gear coming from several people as of Monday April 17th
- moved lunch to 1:00 pm - makes for a more 'balanced' day.
- added gear to the equipment list.
- added food / special needs

What else can I bring?
Bring a piece of gear or two that you use with your Bose Systems. The reason - so we can share the experiences of using different gear with each other.

Examples:
A mic that you like (OM5, Beta 87A, pretty much anything that you think others may not have tried).
Guitar / Bass players bring your favourite preamps and effects.

So if you're bringing something that you don't mind letting others try - drop a note in this thread.

Gear that will be on hand (I will edit this list as more info comes available)

Custom Presets

Cliff-at-Bose will be able to create custom presets for us. If you have an instrument for which there is no preset,
  • You can bring your instrument to Big Sur
  • Cliff can do what he does to create a new preset
  • The final part of the process will have to be done back at Bose after the conference

ST--Gotcha covered on the KMS105. Although, lately we've been experiencing a bit more high-end feedback than I remember having before. We were going to send it in for a checkup, but I'll bring it. Maybe we'll learn something there.

More than likely bringing my Variax 700 electric and Pod XTLive.

I'm flying from Houston but will gladly bring any of the following if anyone needs them (Please PM if needed):

    Yamaha Magic Stomp
    Sansamp GT2
    V-amp2
    Vg-88
    Vg-8

Please let me know.

Hey Chad,

Thanks - I'll edit the gear list at the top of the page to include the KMS 105.

I think of the VG-8 and VG-88 as separate (got both, unlikely to sell either in the near future), but if I was to bring only one, it would probably be the VG-88.

That's a lot of stuff to haul. Let's see who else chimes in. If you hear from anyone in a PM, please let us know what else you decide to bring so I can post in the list above.

Thanks.

Hi ST,
I'm bringing my Alto Sax (The Bari is too big and doesn't travel well!) and my Samson Roam 1 wireless mic setup. If you need one, I can bring a Sansamp bass driver and a Nanoverb. It doesn't look like there are any of these on the list. I also have a Sennheiser E609 Silver guitar cabinet mic and a Sennheiser E602 (I think that's the number) kick drum mic if you think we need them. Let me know what else we might experiment with as I have lots of toys laying around.
Thanks for all your hard work!
Dean

Hi Dean,

That's great. Thank you! I'm going to add these items to the list in the lead post.

I have visions of bunches of us clustered around the stage area experimenting / experiencing all this great gear - in ways that would be near impossible to do otherwise. Should be a riot.

I will let you know if anything else comes to mind. Thanks again!

I'll bring the Sennheiser EW-100 headset mic. It sounds pretty good on the SM-57 preset, but I'm sure it could stand a little improvement in the lower end (I usually tweak the remote a little).

I've been corresponding with ST over the day, so he already knows what I can bring, but I figured I'd post what I'm planning on.

I'm an acoustic guitarist so some acoustic gear -

Pendulum SPS
Pendulum SmartCord (phantom-powered preamp in a cord)
Rane AP13
Rane MAP33
Fishman Pocket Blender

I'll bring a couple electric toys too -

SansAmp
Korg AmpWorks (bass & guitar)
Fender Pro Junior amp

Other stuff -

AKG 535
Fake book pdf's in case we want charts & a printer to print them out
digital SLR camera & tripod for some photos in case no one else brings one

Is anyone interested in any of this stuff? I won't bring it if no one has interest.

ST,

Are there any plans to video tape the proceedings? (Bose?)

Sounds like there may be some real magic happening in both the discussions and musical interactions.

The two 10:00 AM sessions are "to be determined".

Here is a list of topics that you contributed in other threads. I've culled out those that are incorporated in the other more formally defined sessions.

  1. Equipping the band (for those folks who are doing the gear for everyone).
  2. Guitar Tubes, Amps, Modellers
  3. Introducing new performers to the System.
  4. Long term user perspectives
  5. Making it work as a house / festival system
  6. Microphones (some of the different popular mic choices, like the KMS 105, the Audix OM5, and the Shure Beta 87A)
  7. Mono vs stereo, especially for sequenced or prerecorded trackstracks (background for live performers)
  8. Negotiating and getting what you need and want at the venue.
  9. Songwriters workshop
  10. Technical riders
  11. Ten Octaves of Love: Hearing and talking about the sound.
  12. Travelling with the Bose System
  13. Where we first met - talking about the forum

Give it some thought. We'll probably go with a 'break-out session' format where we split up into smaller groups to discuss the most popular topics.

We can work on the logistics at the Welcome session on Sunday at 7:00 pm (Big Sur Lodge).

I'm going to take only carry-on stuff, since I have to change planes several times both out and back. I'll have a Hohner Steingerger copy guitar and a Digitech RP50, and I'll bring a handful of charts that will include Bb and Eb versions, just heads and changes, nothing elaborate, but I have been invited to do a set, and my preference would be to do a quartet of guitar, bass, drums and sax, in a jazz/pop approach (Beatles tune, standard or two, maybe one or two of my own tunes). Depending on the slot, willing participants could get together for a few minutes beforehand. Anybody interested (we could even do two guitars and/or keys).

I plan to bring my SPL Transient Designer & insert cables, also an Audix OM5. As long as my luggage arrives at the same airport I do. Smile

I'm bringing my video cam to get some clips of the various performances, nothing "formal". I will want to see alot of this thru my own eyes and not a viewfinder, but will do as much as I can and am certainly willing to let others aim it around.

If anyone else brings a cam, and I'm sure someone will, there will be a possibility of editing together different angles by FTPing the files.
