I've started using my Fender Blues Jnr amp mic'd up with a Sure SM57 (into my Bose L1mkII + T1 + 2xB1's.
I have a tiny mic stand (like one to sit on a grand piano to hold a mic at the pianist's hight for singing in to) that sits on the floor in front of the amp, pointing mid-way between the speaker centre and the outer rim of the speaker. I get a good sound - I'm happy with it - BUT I'm forever knocking over the mic as I reach around to change guitar between songs and/or tweak the amp controls. It's an open back'd amp and I was wondering how it might sound if I was to stick the mic in the back ? Hell, I was wondering about fixing the mic permanently into the back (with some sort of fixing) and fitting an XLR input into the side or back of the amp to just plug it in from there. Can any one see any problems with this idea ? eg. would electric hum be picked up by the mic's close proximity (inside the amp) to other amp components ? Would it be dangerous etc etc ? Hoping someone can help with this. However, upon posting this question on a guitar forum I frequent, some helpful guys came up with these solutions : 1. using a Sennheiser 609 microphone and dangle it down from the amp handle. Simple option that doesn't need any form of mic stand. 2. An Audix clamp thing : http://pro-audio.musiciansfrie...b-Grabber?sku=703590 Buying an extra mic will leave me with one more than I need but will avoid having to remember carrying the harness thing (or my mini-mic stand). Plus, I don't know how the mic sounds - what if I don't like it ? !!! However, the mic harness thing won't cost me as much and I can continue to use the mic I'm so far happy with. I've also just bought an XLR-XLR mic cable where the end I'll plug into the mic has a right angle, so the cable doesn't stick out, outwards. I might see how I get along with that before splashing out on anything else. Any further thoughts ? What do you guys do ? Thanks guys for your help ! |

I don't think a mic in the back will work very well. Listen to your amp from behind and that is the sound you will be getting from a mic. If you like it then go for it. My 2 cents. Roy

Howdy Snake,
I do EXACTLY that. I play thru a Fender Super Champ XL, with the Audix Grabber, with a little Sennheiser mic, with a right angle XLR. Hardly know it's there and it sounds great. For me, there's nothing like a little Fender amp - no simulator is the same, the Grabber is perfect, the Senn actually sounds better than the dear ol' 57, and the R-A is the cherry on the sundae. Can't go wrong! Best luck, Mike |

When I was Micing up - I went thru all that. I ended up with a Senneiser 606/609 hung over the front but in a small foam holder I cut just to keep it an inch off the grill. -
worked great and took up no valuable stage space. cheers Cheers All Sparky |
