It's studio pre amp is it not? Are you without a T1 and your looking for something that can do double duty studio and mic pre for live?

I went ahead and bought the U5 is is expensive but what a sound. Great improvement over the LR Baggs para DI. I have the old Bose L1 system. The set up is guitar to U5, to Mackie mixer, to L1. Although it did cost me a lot of money to get the sound that I was looking for, I am VERY pleased with the guitar sound. Thank you for your response.

Hi estesj,

Here are a couple of ideas for you.

Try running your guitar directly to the L1® Model I (or Classic) Power Stand Channel 2. Don't use the U5 or the Mackie mixer.

Try the presets in the 40s. These are for acoustic guitars. Just try them all and pick one that you like.

Now, put the U5 between the guitar and the L1® and see how that sounds.

How is that?

I think that in your shoes, I would run
Run the guitar to the U5
Run the U5 directly to the L1 Channel 2
✔✔ Try different Presets on L1 Channel 2
skip the Mackie for the guitar.

That sounds logical but for one thing. Our group has two guitars we run thru the mix board. I run one channel of the mix board to channel 1 and the other to channel 2. Channel 1 is for vocals, channel 2 is for guitars. I PAN all the way right for channel 1 and all the way left for channel 2. I have channel 2 pre set for 42. that way I have more control over the guitars. Does that sound logical?

Hi estesj,

That does sound completely logical.

I guess the only other thing I might try in your situation
Run your guitar to the U5
Run the U5 directly to the L1 Channel 3
✔✔ Set the input level on L1 Channel 3 and experiment with that to get a good level without audible clipping.
skip the Mackie for the guitar.

I'd just be very curious to hear how things sound without the Mackie mixer in the signal chain.

I guess the other thing to try is
Run your guitar to the U5
Run the U5 directly to the L1 Channel 2
✔✔ Use Preset 42
skip the Mackie for the guitar.

and run the other guitar through the LR Baggs Para DI to L1® Channel 3.

The goal, again is to run your guitar and U5 through the simplest possible signal path to the L1®.

Ultimately, it may be easier to control everything through the Mackie mixer, but since you've made this tremendous investment in the sound (Avalon U5), I think it would be worth experimenting with these different approaches.

How does that sound to you?
