Hi, when i plug in my guitar with a Shadow soundhole pickup i get feedback on very low volume.
Is there any solution for this or do i have to change the pickup?

Hi JannesS,

Thank you for joining the forum.

Please tell us what model of L1® system you have.
Please see: Different Models

How close are you to the L1® when you hear the feedback.

Please describe the room you are in when you encounter this feedback.

Is this a low frequency howl or a high frequency squeal?

Can you tell us which Shadow Sonic pickup upu have? Here is a link to their web page.

If it is one of the models that has the built in microphone, you may need to turn the gain down or just turn that feature off.

Anyway, please tell us a bit more about what you are experiencing, and we'll see if we can figure this out.

It's a L1 Compact and the noise comes even if i connect my guitar to the Tone match connection for guitar, the noise is a kind of feedback on a very high frequensy. The same noise occur when i connect a Fender Jazzbase to the unit.
I have the L1 in a quite small room right now when setting up the system, this might have something to do with the noise. The sound from a michrophone is really good and from a Clavia Nordstage it's really good too. I did connect my banjo with a passive pickup and that sounds very fine too.

Does this mean that you get a high frequency noise when you connect the Fender Jazz Bass to the Compact Channel 2?

Are you using the same connecting cord when you get the noise using your Shadow Sonic sound hole pickup?

Is it a different cord when you use the banjo with the passive pickup?

Hi, i have used different cords but the same noise appears, i used the same cord for the banjo so i don't think the cord is the problem.
I have also connect the guitar through a mixer connected to channel 2 and i have the same problem here.
The Shadow michrophone is SH 145-G and i have never had any problems with it before connected to a Schertler Unico or a Phonic mixer.
I'm not sure it's feedback but it's on a really high frequency, the noise occure when i'm close to the L1 Compact but disappear when i move a couple of meters from the unit with my back towards the L1.
Could a T1 Tonematch solve this problem?
The idea with this compact PA was to run it in a small pub with 2 michrophones and 2 guitars so the T1 should be enough mostly.

Regards
Janne

Hi Janne,

Thanks for the comprehensive answers.

One last question - does the sound go away if you press your hands on the strings of the guitar or the Jazz Bass?

I'm guessing the the banjo uses some kind of piezo or electro-mechanical/contact pickup. The Shadow Sonic pickup and the Jazz Bass pickup are both using magnetic/coil pickup systems so if the sound persists even if you mute the strings then the pickups are probably picking up an electro-magnetic signal someplace.

I'm going to do some quick checking on something and be back in a few minutes.

Hi again
It doesn't help to press my hand on the string, the noise is still there.

Hi Janne,

Thanks! If the sound doesn't change when you press your hands on the strings then I don't think we are dealing with feedback in the traditional sense of the word. We are picking up some sound that is not originating with the strings. It might be originating as electro-magnetic noise and being received by the magnetic pickups (as though they are acting as antennae for radio signals).

I just tried a bunch of different guitars with magnetic pickups. I brought them really close to the Compact and I can't seem to get any electro-magnetic feedback.

I'm wondering ... have you tried the Compact in a different location? Just try moving it to different part of the room, or perhaps a different room altogether.

Hi again,
Now i have tried after moving the Compact to a different part of the room but still the same result,
then i moved it to a room with more space but unfortunately the problem still occurs.
I will contact my dealer tomorrow and hopefully they have another Compact to test in, if you can't rebuild the problem i guess that there is something wrong with my L1 Compact.

Thanks for your time.
Janne

Hi Janne,

Thanks for letting me know how that turned out.
I hope you and the dealer can figure out what is happening. I can't replicate it here.

Good luck tomorrow.

Nice to meet you.
Where are you?
What kind of music do you play?

Nice to meet you too.
I live in the south part of Sweden and i'm playing in a hobby band named Fria Tyglar("free rein" in English), we are playing Irish folk music, Swedish folk music and everything we believe fun to play. If it turn out well with the L1 Compact we plan to switch our PA system to 2 L1 Compact, the song sounds amazing in the L1 Compact, crispy and clear.
Of course i let you know the result from my discussion with my dealer, could be a good experince for you if somebody else face the same problem.

Take Care
Janne

I've tested a Martin guitar with a LR Baggs M1 active microphone and it sounds good, it's the same type of microphone as the Shadow, i couldn't here any noise from this one.

Take Care

More information: I was visiting my dealer today and when plugging in my own guitar there was no noise at all!!!!!
Now i believe that there is some noise from my electrical power installation and next step will be to find some equipment who can take care of that.
Probably this noise will disappear when i set it up somewhere else but home.

Regards
Janne

Hi Janne,

Well this probably explains why I could not replicate the problem here.

Please let us know how it goes when you try your Compact in some different places.

Thanks.

Hi, i have now figured out that the problem is in our electrical installation and there is nothing wrong with the Bose L1.
Me and my band was practicing today and the system sound amazing, thank you Bose for bringing a new dimension into our music.

Hi again, i just want you to know that the reason for that noise was a battery charger for my automatic lawn mower.
Me and my band have decided to buy 2 L1 Compact and sell our old equipment, it's already ordered.

Kind Regards
Janne

So... you can't play through your L1 while mowing the lawn?
This is an infringement on our freedom and our way of life! Big Grin

In Swedish:
Tjenare Janne! Lycka till med ert inköp! Compact är ett underbart system! Var i södra Sverige är du?

Hi moderator!
I wasn't REALLY saying anything bad in swedish, just congratulating him and his band to the good choice of system, and welcoming him to the forum.
I also asked where in southern Sweden he lived.
The translation back into english was the joke.
