Well I originally thought that this was going to be In "Your very worst gig ever forum". They had booked the band, a four piece, drums, two keys and guitar for dinner music at the Big Winn Golf Club. After a 1 hour and 45 minute car ride we had to load everything into a boat then ferry over to Big Winn Island. When we arrived there we had to load everything into golf carts to get the equipment to the club house and from there we had to cart the equipment through the building to the restaurant .Thanks to the L1 2xB1 system this was much easier than it would normally have been.
I thought we were in big trouble when we entered the dinning lounge and realized it was round with 30'ceilings and the band was to set up in the middle of the room with people dining all around us. If all that wasn't enough, as we were setting up we were informed that they did not want any jazz that they wanted us to play pop music. Thank God that these guys are great musicians and we had the L1 because to play pop music at dinner club volume in a round room with people all around us and still sound right would have been impossible without it(L1).We played or should I say jammed every pop tune requested and it sounded great.
We received nothing but good comments on the band and our sound. Everyone was happy including the band until we had to tear down and repeat the process to go home.

Here is the equipment on the boat. It's hard to believe that is all we used for a four piece band.

This one shows people around us. The Lady sitting directly behind the L1 came to us after and said how much she enjoyed our sound. Try to do that with any other PA system

This is a great story. The room looks beautiful and I bet you guys played great.

Any explanation of the "book" on the stand in front of you???

And please do consider joining us for the Fall Conference.

Ken

Cool set up.

Could You give the details of your Setup.

Thanks for any Response.

Those really are beautiful drums. What are they? The wood hoops with the matching trim give them such a distinctive look, and the hand rubbed oil looking finish is stunning. I can't believe you don't have cases for them.

Words of wisdom Tom,
and a pretty good description of starvin (Rick's) playing style.

If you haven't heard any of his group's tunes,
go Here and check it out.

Celtic Wind is epic, Route 66 is particularly swingin'...all of it is very tastefully done.
These recording are probably not the (ebay purchased) wood-hooped kit,
in fact, some are electronics, but the acoustic drum sounds are elegant.

Louis the Keyboard player has hundreds of charts in books for everyone in the band and so do Brent(guitar),Robin(keys ,keyboard bass sax and clarinet) when people request tunes jazz or pop they just grab that book find the tune read the chart. Louis will call out three tunes then plays a request. They use the charts as a guide for the chords and lyrics it is mostly jammed.

I will have to find out from the guys what they use. The acoustic kit was not miced at all for this gig. I do know that everything went through a Yamaha mixer to the L1.(more details to follow)

They are Ayotte customs with wood hoops. They have a real earthy quality to them that I love and the looks are just a bonus.

Actually I purchased these drums directly from Ayotte in Vancouver through the Internet 6-7 years ago. (They haven't sold that way since Ray Ayotte left). All the accoustic recordings were done using the Ayotte kit and the electronics were DDrum 3.
PS the electronic sound was butchered in the studio they sounded much better on later recordings when we got a handel on mixing them.
Thanks For the positive feed back
Rick
