Hi Ted,

I have played in many situations where there were no space restrictions and have always gravitated toward a position someplace between 8-15 feet out from the L1®.

Volume
There is not a lot of volume difference between 8 feet and say 10 feet, 12 feet, 14 feet, 15 feet. Theoretically there is about 3 dB SPL difference between 8 feet and 16 feet. It would take another 16 feet to give me 3 dB difference again. But there are other factors to consider.

Other factors
Things that might change where I would chose to stand include the size of the venue, type of music, distance to the audience, if I was playing solo or in a group.

Latency
One thing I have noticed: - Once I get out around 10 to 15 feet and beyond, I start to be aware of some latency. That is - I can hear myself acoustically immediately, AND I am aware that I am hearing myself through the L1® just a little bit later.

Since I rarely use reverb or delay, I am really aware of this distance=time related delay when I hear it. So I personally prefer to be within that range where I am not disturbed by my awareness of that. I can hear it closer than 15 feet, but I really am aware of it by the time I get to 20-25 feet.

We have some notes about the Latency and the L1® and the internal delay is probably 1-3.5 milliseconds. A rough rule of thumb gives us about 1 millisecond of delay per foot¹. There is an interesting article on the Whirlwind site Latency and Digital Audio Systems that speaks to people being aware of latency at 10-15 milliseconds.

Why do you ask?
Back to your question, "How far in front of your L1 do you stand when you have unlimited space ?"
Why do you ask?

edit: added detail and links about latency

¹ [edit: rough approximation of delay because of the difference between hearing a sound source almost immediately as in hearing your own voice acoustically or through bone conduction versus hearing the sound source amplified at a distance taking into account the speed of sound travelling through air at sea level in dry air at 20 °C (68 °F)]

Hey Ted

I got use to playing closer to my L1 because of space restrictions.

Now, when I have the space, I rarely take advantage of it. Opting for the sound I've grown accustom to. About 4'to 6' behind me.

Hi Guys ! Smile

How are y'all ?

Thanks for your responses.

I've noticed that lately I seem to be less sensitive to the latency thing ( that ST mentions ) than I used to be. This means I can stand farther away from the unit without the vocal delay bothering me.

I use to stand about 5 to 6 feet away, now it's more like 10 feet away.

I am enjoying the wider spread, improved balance and seemingly increased ambience of the sound that I hear when I am farther away from the L1 ( I have a classic ).

This also reduces the likelyhood of microphone feedback whether major ( as in squeal ) or minor ( as in subtle skewing of the sound via regeneration of the sound thru the mic channel )

In short, I am really enjoying the sound out there !

This has got me curious as to what other peoples experience has been, hence the question.

Your thoughts and comments are welcome and hopefully a few other folks will join in also.

Thanks ! Smile

Ted

Like starvin007, a drummer, I've gotten used to being crammed in close to my Model II.
Usually 2-3' away, slightly in front.

When I can get further, the most I go is about 4' in front a and maybe 2-3' off to the side.

Ditto Drumr.

I usually am lucky if I can be 4' away, more often I'm 3', and off to one side. Just the venues I happen to play in. When I've had a chance to "spread out", I'm usually about 6'-7' away or so.
