We're kicking off the new season for "Nights Sounds at Sebastian Inlet State Park" this Friday night 7-9. They expect 300 - 400 people will attend. It's bit of an unusual get up. The stage is a stand alone deck about 12' x 12' with two steps up between two pavilions. One pavilion is about 20' off the left front corner the other is 30' off the right front corner. We think they will have seating on the ground or folks will bring their own. We'll be playing much louder than normal, which is about 10 o'clock. Any suggestions on the best place to set up a Bose L1 with 2 subs for coverage and minimum feedback (on or off the deck)??? Pictures below. We're also going to Video/audio tape the gig.

Hi Mike o,

I looked back at some of your previous posts and it looks like you are running an L1® Classic with your two B1s.

I would put the L1® at the back of the stage, centered. Stack the B1s, one on top of the other.

Then put you and Katye close to the front of the stage (to get maximum distance between you and the L1®).

Double check the hints in Microphone Feedback

Turn up the volume to suit you and Kayte, and turn up a little more if you get requests to do that.

Have a great show.

Mike,
I concur with ST. There might be some question of placement if you had more that one unit. The stage seems low enough so the sound will reach people on the grass just fine. (We've ocassionally had to tip our units down in those situations.

One other possibility is to wear ear protection and crank it up more--hopefully designed for musicians, so you won't muffle the highs too much. My husband got me some fancy musicians' ear protection for the rare occasions when turning up to the audience's satisfaction does not match my well-being.

Looks like a lovely spot. Have a great gig!

Thanks for taking time to reply. Would there be any reason not to set the Bose system on the ground on the side? I know we'll need to be louder than I like. I tend to sit about even (never in front of) the Bose system at rehearsal or gig's. I can hear the music fine. My wife is normally cruising about the audience with her wireless headset so it's most important for her and the audience to hear the system well. Ear plugs is option. I just don't like them.

I've played similar setups, and I think you'll do fine. Turn it up as loud as is acceptable to you.

The only thing you'll lose outdoors may be a bit of bass end (not where you are, but out at a distance), so you may want to turn that up a little...but with the wood deck, you may not need to. See when you get there. As was mentioned already, moving to the front of the deck will lessen your guitar low end feedback probs.

Seriously, the Bose is killer outdoors - I'm constantly amazed.

PS: Wish I could come hear you guys!

Hey Mike!

Looking at the stage immediately triggered me in thinking about some "isolation" of your B1s from the wooden stage. I use a Gramma Pad most of the time on any wooden stage, just to de-couple the B1s from the stage. You could try a couple of rugs under them or just move them to the ground next to the stage, if they cause any problems for you. You might also want to lay down a small rug to set the mic stands on, to isolate them a little too. It might help with feedback issues, if you have to crank things up.

Just a couple of thoughts, while looking at the stage. Have a GREAT gig and be sure take your sunscreen! Smile

Based on this, and my looking at the pictures, I'd put the L1 on a back corner, with you (sitting?) on the opposite front corner. That way, you can easily move the B1's on/off the stage as needed, you are not directly in front of the L1, and you can easily move the whole system further to the side (off the stage) if necessary.

As a refinement (looking again at your original post) -- put the L1 on the corner closer to the further-away pavilion ... the back right ... (to make the L1 a little more equi-distant between them). That would then put you on the front left ... closer to the nearer pavilion. However, aesthetics may over-ride this 'refinement', and I don't think it'll make much difference overall.

Since Kayte wanders, her position relative to the L1 will be self-adjusting!

Just make sure your cables don't restrict you from being more than 20' from the L1!! (In case you want to move it off the platform another 10'.)

p.s.: some of the Photos on your web site are pre-L1 days -- you need some new ones!! (Maybe from this event?)

I appreciate everyone taking the time to post recommendations. Lots of good ideas. We'll be setting up a few hours before start time so I'll have a chance to experiment. We'll take plenty of Pix's and I hope some good video to share.
