Hey Chuck,

Thanks for all the great pictures.

It is plain to see that you and Tom really did your preparation with the bands. This must have been a great experience for everyone including the audiences.

Did you develop any tips for new users?

How about tips for those of us who may be supporting new users?

Sometimes the things we say are colored only by the people to whom we say them. I am interested in both aspects. What you had to say, and how you said it.

Hey Chuck,

Thanks so much for this great report and the excellent pictures.
I appreciate your description and totally honest appraisal of each group's sound from the audience perspective.
Would have loved to have been there!

Pete

Chuck & Tom,

Looks like it was quite an event!

Also looks like it was quite a challenge with so many using amps & having them all positioned facing forward - especially the one band that had them closer - bigger!

It's always less than ideal to use the L1® for the first time in a performing situation, & I know you had to deal with that over & over. Still some get it, & that's a GREAT thing.

I'll bet you could have notched the acoustic guitarist you had to mic, or even used a high-pass filter to tame the low-end problems you were having. I have had some luck with that a few times, but it's always a challenge.

It looks like you had enough depth on the stage to have folks hear well from side to side.

Did you have any observations with mixing the center Model I/Classic with the Model II's?

Did you have any trouble with the hollow stage causing any bass problems in the room?

It looks like you had to use B1's a couple times for a keyboard bench. Smile Been there!

I love having the other stage with the triple system nearby so folks could get a direct comparison. When Dan & I did the Sisters Festival we got the comment over & over that our stages with the L1 were much more enjoyable for the audience.

Great job!

Tom

Just listened to Brett Mitchell's performance on DetroitMusic.TV site from this event. Was his vocal coming from the Model I/Classic in the middle of the stage?

Hi ST,

Tom B had contacted at least one member of each scheduled band prior to the event. That was mostly a high-level converstation, as far as I know. Perhaps Tom could offer more specifics here at some point...

Having a mere 15 minutes between bands made it very challenging to get into a lot of detail. I had the best luck with speaking to each player as I helped them dial in their tones. I'd mention to that the vocals were pretty well maxed out and thus couldn't be turned up, so be sure to EAT THE MIC. I then suggested to instrumentalists that they focus on the vocals and adjust the volume of their instruments accordingly. The short version went something like "Lay back on your instrument when the singer is singing and remember to bring your instrument back up when they're not singing." The most common response went something like "Oh, you mean play dynamically? Cool!"

I attribute the sonic success of this event in large part to the high level of musicianship in the bands. Tom and I were really impressed and pleasantly surprised in that regard...

Hi Tom,

Yeah, I would love to have spent a few more minutes tweaking the mic'd acoustic. Time just didn't allow it...

No issues with the Model 1 vs. Model II. The Model 1 was dedicated to the house drum kit and drum vox, when present. We had an AKG D112 on the kick and a diff pair of ATM33Rs on the rest of the kit. It sounded great on stage and throughout the area inside the couches...

Beyond the couch area, there was a noticeable lack of bass 'punch'. I attribute this to enormity of the space, where 'containing' walls were 100+ feet away!

Hi again Tom,

No, Brett's guitar and vocal came from the Model II to the left (facing stage) of the drums...

I'm fairly new here. I noted in one of Tom Munch's responses, he indicated he had provided L1s at the Sister Folk Festival. I was there, and it is one of the reasons I bought one. I was particularly impressed with the sound you got from Madragia, a five-woman vocal group with percussion. Sounded completely natural.

Hey Fred,

Yes, Dan Sayan & I did sound for that festival. Dan did the sound for Madrigaia at the coffeehouse I believe. I'm thrilled you liked the sound there! You can read our report here.

Chuck,

Just to prove that every post and posted picture is of great help here in the forum:

Below is the solution I found to a problem.
It was a picture of yours that led me to it. Timely and useful.

I had a gig on a cramped stage, where I'd been before, without my L1.
I couldn't hear my kick, and consequently pulled a ligament, trying to play too hard.
The stage was also too small to allow my L1 the first time around.
So, using your lead, I did this, doing away with my drum throne, which solved my problem.
It worked out perfectly.
Many Thanks!!

Solved...
