After last weeks first gig with the PAS, I mentioned two members of different bands checked us out while playing. I was invited to sit it with one band and use the PAS for the entire band. With my second public try and still learning process, here's what happened.
1. L shaped room. Main stage and dance area approximately 30' X 60' with a 15' opening into the shorter leg of the L (about 20' X 40'. Both areas with tables and chairs seating a total of about 150. 2. Stage itself is a cave centered on the main floor. Raised 2' above the dance floor. 7' deep X 15' wide. Stage height was 76". 3. Both rooms of the L have fairly good accoustics and the people do not move around too much. 4. Set up the PAS center stage. Two man job because of having to tilt the system at a steep angle to assemble. Left foam backer in the B1 case, which I figured would give about a 2 or 3 degree forward tilt to compensate for the stage height. 5. Band consists of Lead Guitar, Rhythm Guitar, Drums, Keyboard/Accordian and Bass, however the Doghouse Bass was absent in this case and the Keyboard added bass to cover. I became the 2nd Rhythm guitar. Three vocals, plus an open mic for people from the audience. Would have been four vocals and an open mic if the bass had been there. Also an extra guitar amp (which I wasn't planning on) for a couple of open mic people who brought their own guitars. The band normally uses the old standard setup of drums at the right center 2 Rhythm guitar to stage right, Lead Guitar, Keyboard/Accordian, Doghouse Bass stage left in that order. I rearranged the band and had the drums rear stage right. Then two Rhythm Guitars (both with vocal mics) then the Lead Guitar (with vocal mic)then Keyboard/Accordian (with vocal mic) 4. The band has always mic'ed everything thru their 3 tier system using a 12 channel setup. The drummer has his own mic'ed system (kick, snare, toms, cymbols)into small mixer. The keyboard/accordian has large amp with both instruments wired into a small Behringer mixer. Both the Rhythm and Lead guitars have their own individual amps, normally mic'ed and run into their main mixer, as of course are all ther rest of their setups. 5. I used a NADY MXE-812 mini mixer for the entire setup. I ran 3 vocal mics from the mixer (panned left) to PAS channel 1 using. preset 18. Ran the Keyboard/Accordian, their Rhythm Guitar and the drums from their mixers into my mixer with channels panned right. These then into PAS channel 2. (here I was going to go flat at preset 00- but in the setup confusion I forgot to change the Preset from 18 and so that's what the instruments went at.) The keyboard player also had a mic plugged in to his system, which I wasn't aware of when we started (used it to make announcements etc.) 6. I should mention at this point that the Lead Guitar Player was the one who had heard my band with the system and was sold. His keyboard/accordian player (band leader) was willing to give it a try but extremely skeptical and told me afterwards that he figured the night was a flop as this strange looking thing could not possibly make enough sound. He was especially worried because of not having his personal monitor. The female vocalist is very critical and accurate on sound and was going along with everything but didn't look to hopeful. 7. Had a little trouble trying to get everybody tweaked and ready but the keyboard player started to smile even while I was setting him up. Even I was amazed at the bass sound coming from the single bass module. Next to the Lead Guitar and kept saying "listen to that" and smiling. The drums were easy of course. Tuned their Rhythm Guitar in (the female vocalist). Put my guitar through the POD2 and into Channel 3 of the PAS. Tuned the mics and away we went. 7. Had trouble getting the mic adjusted for the Female vocalist. Couldn't get enough volume without over driving the system. Took about 4 or 5 songs before she and the audience were happy. The Lead guitar was giving us a hum through his amp. Could'nt correct that with the mixer. Finally ran him direct into Channel 4 of the PAS and we eliminated the hum. 8. At one point I left the stage and took a walk around the front room and everything was loud and clear. I went out in the back room of the L shape and I was amazed that everything sounded like it did in the other room. People sitting there said "you got a nice system there sounds good" 9. End result. I learned a lot about some of the things I can do with a single PAS unit and a few things I can try with my band. I only wish I could afford another right now. The audience was pleased with the sound. The skeptical band leader said and I quote " I still cannot believe I had all that sound. In fact I did things tonight with the keyboard I couldn't do before and if I had more time with the PAS there's some other things I could do." Told him Bose was having a 10% off sale. He said if I had the money right now I would buy it tomorrow. So it looks like there is a future sale in the making. In fact in the end every member of the band was impressed and said so. Hey there "TALL TIMBER"
That's a great nickname for a precariously tilted Bose system. Thanks for the detailed report. I think I would have approached that situation with a little apprehension and you seem to have nailed with great aplomb. Congratulations. That's what you need... a tee-shirt with a picture of the Bose system slightly askew and in big letters "Tall Timber" or even "Tall Timbre" All the best! |

Thanks ST. I did approach with a lot of apprehension and it got worse as things got added that I didn't expect.
I have to thank ODGHM for the "TALL TIMBER". We get a lot of comments like Where'd you get that name? None of you are tall. Then I point out the Bose and tell them that's our tall guy at 7 feet. By the way I don't think I'll have to worry about that Legion gig with the 2 adjoining rooms after last night. Dewey "Classic country music is the best" |

Nice job, Dewey. With your "adventurous" attitude, you'll learn more about the system after a few of those types of gigs than you would reading the technical manual and this entire message board twice over. That's definitely the best teacher - get out there and try a bunch of things until you find what works for you.

Just a note to Bose guys.. Just received a e-mail from the leader of the group that I sat in with the other night and provided the sound with my PAS. He asked that I send him all the information I could about what comes with the unit I had as he said and I quote " I am going to buy one and I want to be sure we get everything so that we can experience the sound we had the other night"

Hey Dewey,
Congratulations. There's confirmation for you. You did a great job that night. It's nice to be able to share isn't it. |

WOW! That's awesome! Thanks for sharing that with us. We're so lucky to have so many fantastic owners like yourself out there spreading the word.
You've made my weekend man. Steve |

I mentioned 2 different bands checked out the PAS when we played. Just heard from the second band and they wanted to know where and how much as they are going to buy a PAS. They are bluegrass and gospel. First band was country.

Hey Dewey - I think you will be amazed at how much each unit added expands the overall sound. I was very pleased after purchasing #2, and ST has posted about his experiences adding units. Great gig report. Thanks. |
