I just bought a very inexpensive Acoustic/Elec Bass guitar - and I'm having a blast with it.
Having an L1 is just THE best way to figure out a good tone on a new toy because it's so transparent. I highly recomend plugging in to decide what pick-up or pre-amp or effect makes a new instrument shine. For me, this passive pickup in my 150 dollar Dean Playmate was much improved by a little 30 dollar ART Tube Pre-amp. - but I sacraficed some of the rich over-tones by cutting the highs out of my eq... but I kinda had too because I play the bass with my thumbnail like I do the guitar <G> Anyway, Here's a little tune I built for Halloween to show off the new Bass ( yup, even a little solo in there <G) Nunley tries playing Bass For a NON-bass player, I'm very happy with my new tool. Please note that the clip ain't "art" <G> Just noodeling and a quick vocal/lyric for fun. AND the bass sounds better mic'ed than with it's pick-up... but my silly recordings aside - wringing out a new instrument with a Bose is so much faster and more fun than thru amps that color your tone and fall off after the first 3 rows. Hi Michael,
I enjoyed the recording. Thanks for posting the link. I still have a Bass around here someplace, but every time I play it, it just sounds like a Guitarist playing Bass if you get my drift. Oh yeah, that's what happens to my rhythm. |

Thanks ST ! I know these little constructed tracks aren't very impressive - esp. to the pro players on this board ( hey, remember I'm mostly just a singer ) but I was having so much fun with the new toy I just wanted to share.
I hear ya on the guitar-player-playing-bass syndrome ( g.p.p.B.S.) I'm having the same problem I have with percussion... knowing when NOT to play <G> Best, m |

yeah, lead bass...sounded nice. I notice you are using Acid for the backup, is that a pretty intuitive program? I've been a Vegas user and would like MIDI, thinking of switching to Acid, rather than upgrade to Vegas 8. What's the learning curve there, can you give me any idea? |

Well, I don't use AcidLoops for midi work.
I use it to build tracks with pre-recorded loops. I modify the loops - change keys, tempo, etc, In that little ditty to show off the bass, I think I used 12 different loops. It’s a VERY ez program to use. Fruty Loops is another program like it - and they are the tools that most rap, hip/hop, and club-mix songs are tossed together with. I believe the newest version of Acid does allow for audio and MIDI recording - multi-track stuff but my version is about 7 years old. I use Sonar (From Cakewalk) for my audio recording. For what little midi work I do – I use Kompact ( Or Kontact ) as a plug-in with Sonar. I'm Surprised Vegas 7 (or even 6) doesn’t allow midi construction. hummm. I know it's primarily a vid builder but I thought it had a pretty robust recording environment as well. Truth is, for any Simi-serious recording I do, I play all the instruments…or play something that can drive a good sample tone anyway. I have the GR-20 guitar-synth, my Variax Acoustic guitar, and my HPD-15 drum beast to mimic a boat-load of voices so I seldom use a keyboard and midi track to lay anything else in. |
