I have had excellent results with upright bass direct into the system with a pick up system.

Hi fabking,

David Gage has worked with Bose to create Presets for his Realist series of pickups.

You can read about the pickups here: David Gage Realist™

The list of David Gage Presets for the T1 ToneMatch® Audio Engine is shown below.

Hi again fabking,

You might also want to investigate the SChERtLER DYN-B.

We have some notes about that here: Preset for Double Bass with Schertler DYN-B

Thanks, ST!

Is the David Gauge pickup what you use?
I guess it's easy enought to install (under the bridge feet).

I don't play Bass (at least not in public).

I just wanted to help you find some relevant information. Here is some more.

Here is a early discussion about pickups.

Microphone pickup is typically fraught with the problems you describe, although it is theoretically the purest approach to amplifying acoustic instruments. With a good microphone, you can pick up the sum of all the sound from the instrument, albeit at a single point in space. Oh, and you have to be in a closed anechoic chamber to get it right.

The problems you are experiencing come into play whenever you bring the gain high enough to entertain a large audience at a satisfying sound pressure level. Basically, you are encouraging the electroacoustic feedback loop to be more active, to the point where it approaches and sustains the resonaces you are familiar with and it completely changes the tone of the instrument.

The use of a pickup is probably the best approach to live amplification of instruments such as violin, guitar, cello, upright bass and so forth. At least the feedback loop can have a much higher acoustical gain before feedback. Now, the idea of amplifying the entire composite mechanical and acoustical sound of such a complicated instrument by a pickup of the vibration of one point on its surface sounds like an impossible proposal for purity of signal. However, we have found that some of these configurations do indeed present an acceptable illusion of total instrument sound, especially given some special care for tone shaping. To be clear on this, "acceptable illusion" is not a put-down. It is actually the best you can do. We are just starting to learn about this whole new world of amplification art, and we are fortunate to be doing it with some of the truly talented and dedicated leaders of the art.

The other way to amplify is to forget the original instrument and use a device that creates little or no acoustic sound of its own but rather an electrical signal that creates the illusion that the sound is coming from a traditional instrument. I'm talking about like what Ned Steinberger is doing. Of course, once you have the signal, you have to deliver the sound somehow. You have the ideal system for this, so keep the faith and stay tuned.

There you have it. I'd try a good pickup. We have a preset for a Fishman on a bass. These are very popular. The Realist is also excellent, but I've only heard this used on a bass, under one of the feet on the bridge. I'll ask David Gage tomorrow and report back. This is a new but expanding area of work for us.

Thanks, ST - I appreciate it.
I am probably going to order the Realist pickup today.

I'll throw in my two cents on this question... I'm using a K&K Bass Max pickup into a T1 Tonematch Audio Engine with preset, "50Hz-5kHz Bandpass" and getting a very neutral and natural sound out of my old Kay Upright bass through my L1/M2. Sounds just like my Upright bass, only amplified. I don't play at extreme volumes, though. That might be a different story.

If you have a L1/Classic or Model 1, the preset is there, but I don't know the number. Sorry.

Good luck.

OK, Thanks John - sounds like I should consider a K&K (I'll admit that I have never heard of that brand). I have noticed that ToneMath has a preset for Fishman bass pickups. Have any bass upright bass players out there had any experience with them?

Walter,
K & K seem very popular in California,Where I am.Rockabilly players like the Bass Master RB plus pick up (sounds like fishing gear,no?)as it mixes sounds from the bridge as well as from the fingerboard. The preamp has 2 channels to balance between the pick up signals form the bridge string sound, and the finger board slap. This might work well for bluegrass players that slap too. They make quite a few pick ups though, and I'm not sure what models have pre sets on the ToneMatch.I use a pickup from a company called <a href=http://www.schattendesign.com/bass-10.htm target="_blank" >Schatten</a>
It mixes signals from a pick up on the foot of the bridge together with a pick up under the 3rd string into an on board active pre-amp.I have not tried it with the Bose system yet,but I get good results with it threw conventional amps.

Good luck!
