Though I intend to wait and see what the iPad 2 has to offer, I'm wondering if anyone has connected the T1 to an iPad via USB using the camera connection kit. It seems it would provide a lot of potential, Everyday Looper, iShred guitar effects, etc. I've seen where several folks here are using the iPad for lyrics, just wondering if anyone has tried the above.

I have been using my iPad as my guitar modeler/rig in front of my T1 for practice. I use Amplitube and the Griffin connection kit (and a couple adapters):

Thanks for the response. I am aware of the connection kit you mentioned, and that leads me to a second question.

I assume you are using the kit to run your guitar into the iPad and the processed signal into the T1. That's good, but I am also interested in running multiple channels from the T1 into the iPad and back to the T1, for looping and such. This could be done w/the connection kit via the Aux. Out, but it is my understanding that the iPad input via the kit is mic level, and (here's where my knowledge starts to wane) it's my understanding the T1 Aux Out is line level.

So finally, my second question: Can the aux level adjustment on each channel be used to bring that signal down to mic level so as not to get a distorted signal going into the iPad. This is why I was interested in the USB option.

I've hooked up the T1 to the camera kit, and there was a very loud buzz similar to other USB interfaces out there with the iPad. Unfortunately the iPad is pretty picky about what works going into that camera connection kit. There are some great discussions I've been reading over at the HarmonicDog website forum - MultiTrack Help - that will help you.

There are several interfaces you'll find talked about over there that folks are using to hook up to the iPad. The most-used is probably the Cakewalk UA-1G, but there are some tricks with it that you'll need to read the forums over there about. Scroll down the page in the previous link I posted and read towards the end of the "Input options and microphones" thread or some of the specific threads about interfaces. You may be able to hook up the T1 to the Cakewalk interface although I haven't had any luck with this yet - but I haven't spent a lot of time on it. My hope is on the new interface from Sonoma Wireworks - the GuitarJack 2 when it is released. The best sound I've been able to get so far is with the GuitarJack 1 with my iPhone 3GS and the AmpKit+ app. I have a lot of the apps and interfaces for the headphone jack, and the worst part of those is that many are pretty noisy and you can get horrible feedback if the headphone jack is turned up too loud. Also you can only get a mono signal in through the headphone jack, as opposed to the bottom jack where you can input a stereo signal good for recording with effects. The GuitarJack 1 is also very quiet without the need for the noise pedal, but it doesn't work with Amplitube yet until Amplitube changes their app.

On another note I've had very good luck with the Blue Yeti mic for direct USB recording in stereo.

Oh, I forgot to mention that the coolest interface I've used for the headphone jack is the NSP Breakout Box - Breakout. This is a really cool way to access the iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch as an effects loop like you're talking about. I've used this live quite a bit, but not with the T1 yet. You can dial up the amount of gain so it won't be overloaded with a line level input.

Hey Tom, thank you so much. That's a valuable outline of info, and I really appreciate it. I see a great deal of value in the iPad just for organization of material, to which I've seen you comment before, but would love to be able to utilize it further. Hopefully, Vers.2 may yield a better audio in/out design and make this whole conversation moot, but regardless, thanks a bunch. The Studio Dock certainly looks to be the Cadillac of options ~ in quality, options and price. An integrated high quality audio in/out option would certainly expand this already great device's potential. We'll see what the next couple of months brings.

I haven't heard any reports of Apple adding any better ports on the iPad 2, and considering they got rid of the DA/AD converter in the dock connector in the iPhone 4 and iPad I think it's unlikely. Most of the interface folks are just making interfaces for the dock connector on the iPhone 4 and iPad in expectation that the new devices will have the same configuration.

I saw the Alesis dock at NAMM - it's cool. But, Apple changes their pinouts often and renders older accessories obsolete very quickly. I have an iPod adapter in my car that doesnt charge my 4th gen devices :-(

The Breakout is a good way to guarantee not to get burned by Apple pinout changes. I'll have to check one out.

Yeah, Mike, I have the same trouble with a lot of accessories for the dock connector - they work on some device generations and not on others.

The NSP is really nice. You still have to deal with feedback through the headphone jack, but it's workable. The only app I've found that has adequate volume and low noise though is AmpKit.

I wanted to come back to this discussion with a positive update. I finally made the move to an iPad, 3rd generation, receiving it last Friday.

I had read where folks were having sporadic luck connecting the iPad with some USB enabled mixers. So, using the camera connection kit, I hooked up the T1 to the iPad and got the message that "This USB device is not compatible." Following a lead on another forum, I left everything connected, and the T1 on, and did a Hard Reset on the iPad. Following that, they were connected, and I was able to use Everyday Looper, Garage Band, etc. both in and out of the iPad. Further, there is no hum, the sound quality is great, and I'm a happy camper.

Additionally, it seems the two have "got to know each other" well enough that over the course of 5 or so separate testing sessions since, it has been simply plug and play, no problems whatsoever. So, I feel this is going to be a great additional tool, and wanted to pass the information on to anyone who might be interested.

That's great that the iPad 3rd generation works better with the T1. I haven't tried mine yet. I'm glad that you aren't getting the bad noise I was getting when hooking up previous iPads to the T1.

So how are you going to use the T1 with the iPad now that you've gotten it to work?

One of the things I think I will most enjoy is looping. I find it a great creative and practice tool, and like being able to easily use the L1. To this point I have used EverydayLooper, and plan to try out Loopy as well. I have used it at times in performance, mainly in Farmer's Market type venues, as a "novelty break". Good quality in/out sound for impromptu recording via GarageBand is a nice anddition, and it will also be nice to have amp simulation, etc, easily available through Garage band, though I would see myself using that functions less.
Johnny Wildheart, that is a great option for sound out, but unless I'm mistaken, I don't think you can get sound in with the composite cable.

The composite cable has the 3 colour outputs for the video plus there is a L and R audio rca output as well

How I hook up with the AV cable

First off, sorry for the confusion, I've edited my last post. What I meant to say was that I didn't believe you could route a signal in and out of the iPad via the AV cable. Johnny, I'm not able to see exactly how you are routing your cables from your picture, but are you saying you are using the AV to get sound in and out of the iPad?

yes I use the iPad for audio. Hopefully you can see the cable going into the bottom of iPad (power port), then 2 rca's with 1/4 adapters into the T1 (ch 4 &5) and the usb goes into the supplied plug and then into the main power supply (so the iPad still keeps charging power whilst being used).

Hope that makes sense, if not, let me know and I'll take some better pics.
