This is uncharted territory, BUT, I’ve read many of the other posts about avoiding feedback, and also the questions about where to put the foldbacks. One idea is to have 3 L1’s with one L1 facing BACK at the band.
We use AKG D5's exclusively on stage because of the superior feedback rejection, and also the crystal clear vocals we get. I had a look at the polar pattern for the D5 and realized that there is an enormous hole in the polar pattern (see the attachment) 30 degrees to the right at the front lobe. It’s about 20dB down!! Would it make sense to put the foldback monitor, (pointing back at the microphone), at this angle, even if it was a 620M or an L1, because THAT is where you are going to get the least sensitivity from the mic? |

ozzysteve,
Let me try to explain why it probably won't work. Despite the fact that there is a big node in the polar pattern, sound is not in two dimensions. It is going to arrive in three dimensions, bouncing off of the back wall, bouncing off of you, your guitar, etc. I have never heard of anyone using an L1 turned around for a monitor. It is really not needed if set up correctly. The whole design of the L1 line array family is to eliminate the need to have separate monitors. Perhaps we should address you full setup, as I don't believe using this one mic is going to fix your issue. Eliminating feedback is an art form, and there are other things you can do, ring out the room, use a feedback eliminator, just to name a few. Perhaps the best thing you can do is to call our tech support line, and we can discuss this further. Our direct line is 877-335-2673. Thank you, and we hope to hear from you soon, Eric-at-Bose |

Thanks for the quick reply, it amazes me how much information is on this board, either from the Bose Guys or the users. My learning curve up, to actually getting a L1 system, has been fascinating. I agree with what you said, and i do use all the above-mentioned ways to reduce feedback. I'll experiment with the polar pattern of the mic though, by moving a foldback around the singer for 360 deg and graph the results. Never know, there might be a sweet spot. |
