I’ve been following the Bose L1 since I saw them a few years ago and have been fascinated by the technology, even spending many hours researching and then making my own linear arrays that I use at our gigs. But they are too heavy, and now I am at a point in my musical career like most muso’s, where I’m sick of carrying heavy PA gear each year.

I have read many of the answers to similar band questions on this site, and my question is this: would it be better to use three L1’s with one as side-fill foldback, or use two L1’s as FOH and 3 Bose 620M stage foldback. (We use backing tracks, with me playing guitar and two girl singers. We all harmonize)

Hi ozzysteve,

Welcome to the L1 Forum!

The original design of the L1 systems was for them to be placed at the rear of the stage so they could cover both the audience and the performers, eliminating the need for separate monitors.

However, if you want to use two L1s as a FOH system, you can certainly do so. In which case, I think you could either use a 3rd L1 for monitoring, or you could use the 620Ms as wedge-style monitors.

Since either one would work fine, it mainly comes down to personal preference, but if you are using the L1 as a monitor, placement will be essential. I would recommend a minimum distance of 6-8 feet from any microphone, and your mics should be set up to avoid picking up the sound waves coming from that system.

Let us know if you have any further questions, and thanks for posting!

Adam

I was thinking of having the foldback L1 just behind one of the FOH L1's but pointing back at us.
We use AKG D5 mics which are almost "feedback proof", and so the L1 would be pointing to the back (to the side) of the microphones. Would this work better?

The mics go through 3 Voiceworks Harmonizers, 3 Antares Autotunes and we have a Roland Xv-5050 run by backing tracks on a laptop for backing. All this goes through Behringer Xenix122FX mixer, then through a DBX Driverack PA+ to the amps.
Could I use the Driverack to set up the L1's and "pink" the room as normal, instead of using the Bose T1? I dont want to break up all the gear, to then go individually through the T1 channels.

Yes, that type of positioning for the L1 sounds like it would work better.

You can definitely use the DBX Driverack or any signal processing, if that is your preference.

Thanks,
