Hi everybody.
This is my first post and I am the delighted owner of a new L1 Model II with 2xB1. I was hoping for some information on the best set-up, placement and connections for our trio. We will be using two L1 Model II 2xB1 systems each with a Tonematch engine. I sing backing vocals via an Audix OM-5 and play an Eric Johnson Strat into a Mesa Roadking head and 2x12 cab. The lead singer uses an Audix OM-6 and plays a Parker Fly into a Mesa 5:25 express combo and we have a female lead/backing vocalist using an Audix OM-5. We also use two Sony minidisk players to play mono mp3 and midi backing tracks (drums bass keyboard etc). We play pubs and clubs and the odd wedding up to about 250 people. I think we probably should mic the amps but the other guitarist has resevertations about this. Any help would be much appreciated! Regards, Mark. Hi, Mark!
Welcome to the L1 Owners "society" ... and your venture into better music through better amplified sound! First of all, you've got a great setup with two L1 and T1 (Tonematch) systems. What I would suggest is that each guitar player "take ownership" of an L1/T1 system, in the sense that you'll each have a T1 "dedicated" to each guitarist. One of the guitarist (probably you, since you indicate you are primarily a backing vocalist) will need to share with the female lead/backing vocalist. I would also recommend that the guitarists mic their amps, setting the volume on the guitar amps as low as possible to still get "that tone", and then let the mic and the L1 do the "heavy lifting" and distribute that great guitar tone throughout the room. You will probably have to play with the mic position with respect to the amp to get it "just right", but then that position should be repeatable every time you set up. Then turn the guitar amps sideways or even 'off-stage', if feasible, so the guitar amp's speaker doesn't overlap or 'muddy up' that great tone being distributed by the L1. I'd suggest you check out (if you haven't yet) the Guitars and Other Strings forum, as well as search the whole forum for "mic the amp" for specific tips from other guitarists. Some specific suggestions for connections to the T1: "Strat" (Mark's) T1: Ch. 1: Mark's OM-5 mic Ch. 2: mic from Mark's guitar amp (Roadking) Ch. 3: Female vocalist's OM-5 Ch. 4: 1st minidisk player "Fly" (lead) T1: Ch. 1: Lead's OM-6 mic Ch. 2: mic from lead's guitar amp (express) Ch. 3: (Female vocalist's OM-5 -- alternate/spare) Ch. 4: 2nd minidisk player Be sure to check out all the good stuff in the L1 Wiki, too (if you haven't already ventured there!) -- use the link below. Spend some time as a group getting familiar with the equipment and playing with different Tonematch settings. I do strongly urge you to start out WITHOUT and Reverb, Delay or similar effects; once you get used to the sound "as it is", you can then add in some of those other features if you feel it's necessary -- that may save you from some 'complications' as you get familiar with your new setup. Have fun! |
