My 4-piece pop/rock band plays in large multi-level school gyms and convention centers where not all ears will be in the L1 sound field. I have some 402's and 802's but I am concerned they will excite these reverberant spaces and detract from the clarity of the L1 systems. What are some recommendations for solving this without greatly affecting the performance of the L1 systems?

Tilting your L1's forward works well.

Here are a few links that may help.

Hi Good2go,

I have used 402II's on several occasions with the L1 without any noticeable drawbacks.

I would set up L1's first, check the room and only add 402 or 802 if absolutely neccessary.

Will you be performing from floor level? If so put the extra speakers on stands higher than the top of the L1.

If performng from a stage with audience heads both below and above your level, you may find that the L1s do OK alone, If not follow Starvin007's advice and tilt the L1 forward to those below you and set the extra speakers for those above you.

These are just thoughts to try and separate somewhat the sound fields or dispearsion of the L1 and the coventional speakers. I'm not so sure about controlling reverberation.

I played this past week for the first time in a gym, it was the most reverberant gig thus far with the L1, but still got great compliments on the sound.

Good luck with your setup. If you are the first to play to this audience, in this space, with L1's, it will likely be the best sound they have ever heard there.

O..

We played this gig last weekend from a stage on the gym floor and needed to reach an audience from the floor to 20 feet above. I added the 402's as suggested and we did get a number of compliments on the sound so it appears to have been a good solution. It is amazing how the high frequency dminishes as you rise above the L1's, but a pair of 402's filled in nicely. Thank you for your responses.
