Hello All,
We had a great gig at a large indoor hall for The Hassenfeld Children's Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders yesterday. Katie and I play volunteer shows in the hospital units for them throughout the year and this was their annual party for all the the current and recovering patients from the past year and since it was a big party (400-500) we brought the whole band. It was really the first indoor gig for the new systems since we've been outdoors every weekend since I got them, and I wanted to post some setup notes and tell you about the party. The system was 2 L1M2's with Tonematch engines. First of all I was concerned about the stage being too high for the systems but it was not. It was about 4 feet up and the systems really filled the room and even the dance floor which was literally right next to the stage. I did not angle the Li's downward at all. The ceiling was about 16 feet and very hard, so echoes could have been a problem but they were not. I set both T1's on my side of the stage so I could control everything easily. The setup was pretty simple I patched the lead vox into channel one of the left L1 and the direct out of that channel into channel 1 of the right L1. I found this put Katie's voice nicely in the center of the stage and really helped her cut through the band mix. Oherwise the setup was my bg vox and gtr on the left L1 and the drummer and bassist vocal mics and the direct out of the bass amp (post eq) to the right L1. I really did a 3 minute sound check and that was it for the whole show (2 sets of 45 minutes each) I also patched my Macbook into channel 4 of each L1 for break music. It worked perfectly, (next time I'll remember to charge the iPod.) The system really works. Don't let the name or the fact that we play for kids fool you, we are a rock and roll band. We play real rock music with kid friendly lyrics and messages. And the 2 L1's really had great output and plenty of headroom. I got Katie a new vocal mic (a KMS105 with a sennheiser wireless xmitter) and it sounded beautiful with no feedback problems at all. I did have a bit of feedback with my ev767 but it's placement was the problem. It was in a direct line with the left L1. I did a quick parametric sweep and was abe to notch it out pretty well although with a bit more time I would have been able to focus it tighter. The entire band loved the new system and the fact that it is so portable and easy to set up and tear down always makes me very happy. And now for the gig. It was a fantastic gig and the kids were thrilled. The organizer said it was the best party they've ever had and asked us back for next year! We make music for a lot of great reasons, we love it, we get paid (somtimes), we get to share our talents, but the best reason of all for us is the kids. An event like this really brings home how lucky we all are to be able to make people happy with our music, especially those that could really use some extra happiness. While we played kids and parents danced together, little girls chased Katie around in a conga line and little boys got up on stage and played air guitar along with me. It was a wonderful time for everyone. I want to thank everyone at Bose and here for the help and advice on these systems. My first post here a few months ago was made after another great gig, similar in many ways except for the backbreaking gear hauling before and after. I finished that day at 10pm and still had gear in the car. Yesterday we finished at 2:30 and by 4:30 I had broken down, packed up, drove back to the studio, put all of the gear away and was out to a late lunch with some family members. We are playing another free outdoor show at Union Square Park in NYC on the 28th at 11am. So if any of you are around and want to stop by, please do and be sure to say hello.
