I am a drummer in a four piece group, 2nd Planet, and we each have our own PAS. Myself and the bass player both have four subs. Two driven by the PAS, and two by an outboard amp. I was seriously going to try a Mackie 15" powered sub to simplify the setup with one sub and not having to worry about "having enough thump". We performed at a very open area outdoor gig last week, and I used my 4 subs. When sitting at my drum kit it sounded fine, but it didn't seem nearly loud enough to get into the audience. I'll tell you what, I had my keyboard player play my kit and went into the audience and listened. I couldn't believe how much volume and clean bass they produced. I run a Shure Beta52, and 3 SM57's for the rest of my kit. I use the Beta 52 preset into channel 1. I run an XLR into channel 2 for the sm 57's from my Mackie mixer. I have an effects processor into the mackie, to add a little zip to my snare and toms. This also leaves channel four open on the mackie for a vocal mike with effects. Today i did a smaller outdoor gig with just 2 B1's and two mics, and it was perfect. The main things with the B1's is being able to add or subtract as the gig dictates, I can always count on clean bass, and it keeps the system in "Bose Harmony". The B1's are always going to give the right amount and proper sound because they were tuned for the system.
