Just did an accoustic gig at a newly established farmer's market in a small town near here. Kind of a last minute thing in which an opening act had to cancel and I was asked to come in with about 24 hours notice.
The main part of the market area was in a parking lot behind a church. The area was about 65' x 125', blacktopped, with the vendors set up on each of the long sides of the lot with a center aisle just wide enough to get a car through. The area extended out into the street both to the right and left of the entrance. I was booked for a 2 hour show and informed that at the end of my show a bluegrass group was coming in to setup and play I set up in one rear corner of the parking lot with the L1/B1 facing at about a 45 degree angle to cover the entire lot. There were audience chairs set up in an arc directly in front of me, between me and the vendors. I used my Ibenez AEL50S accoustic/electric directly into channel 2, using the Ibenez preset. For the vocal, I used a Shure 58 directly into channel 1 with 00 preset. Had my Samick Formula FA2 with a Pod for backup, but was having so much fun with the accoustic sound I never used it. The comments were all good and people said they could hear the vocals and guitar very clearly throughout the entire area, including out and into the street. The bluegrass group showed up about a half hour before my time was up and sat in the audience while I finished my show. I could see their heads get together and every once in a while they would nod in my direction. Was beginning to wonder if something was wrong. LOL. After I did my last song, the entire bluegrass group came up and asked about my "smokestack" and one wanted to know where the basket and backboard was. When they got done having their fun they all complimented me on the sound, especially the clearness of the vocal and guitar. One of them had an accordian with him to play a few polkas and he asked if I would not tear down until he had a chance to plug his accordian in and try it. He did so and was amazed at the sound (as I was). Even though I couldn't remember what the preset for accordian was, so he was using the Ibenez guitar preset. They spent so much time asking me questions and trying the L1, that it was a half hour after my act closed before I got to tear down and then they began setting up for their gig. It was a nice relaxed atmosphere so this didn't create any problem.. As I drove out, watching them set up I smiled to myself and thought, "boy you guys are not gonna like your sound near as well any more after hearing the L1/B1" and the setup and tear down is gonna be a lot more complicated than what mine was.....Thanks Bose!!! ~Dewey, October 8, 2006~ full thread here |
