Here's my report from the performance on Saturday (April 23, 2006).
I set up the mics, mixing board, reverb and compressor and finally the PAS. I tested the sound level going to the back of the room with a CD of similar music. The CD sounded fantastic with clear uniform volume levels at least 80-100 feet into the room. I then tested the vocal mic, by having a friend sit in the back and I sang into it (at the same spot the artist would). At this time, the PAS was behind my right shoulder about 4 feet back. I noticed a lot of echo with the reverb unit turned off. I then moved the unit behind where the drummer would be sitting, (just as ST suggested, but slightly more forward and angled so that the PAS tower would point towards the center of the room; I thought this would also provide greater monitoring for the performers themselves. The echo reduced by about 50 %. I guess this is because I now needed less volume to cover the audience area. At this point all chairs were assembled but only one person (my friend) was in the audience. The results during concert were: 1. perfect sound for both vocalist and violin. 2. some trouble with increasing the mridangam (drum) mics gain (the mic closest to the audience). mild feedback occurred twice in 3 hours, still a very positive experience. 3. I personally thought the volume for people sitting in the first few rows was too loud (about 30 minutes into the performance, I walked around the perimeter of the hall to check volume.) However, the audience and the performers did not complain (which was never the case in the past). 4. The echo problem became practically unnoticeable during the concert. I guess one can attribute this to audience members now acting as sound absorbers. Conclusions: My main concern was that the violinist played very softly and I had his mic gain almost at 85%. In the traditional PA, I would have been fighting squealing feedback constantly. In this performance I only noticed a mild feedback at one point, and I am not even sure if it was feedback or an error in his playing. I will have to work on how to deal with the drummers right side mic for future concerts. SUGGESTIONS WELCOME. Due to heavy rain, only about 60% of the room was occupied, with the majority of audience in the first 50 feet from the stage. At the end of the concert, the vocalist announced how great the sound was in his final remarks, and the violinist came up to me and shook hands during the post concert activities. Funny thing was that several audience members were walking around trying to figure out where the sound was coming from, I had kept the towers just touching the edge of the curtain, so no one could even see it. They couldn’t figure out why it seemed that no sound was coming out of the traditional PA, but they weren’t even sure it wasn’t ! Once again, a resounding success in my book, Thank you Bose and all the folks in this forum !!! - full thread here |
