Anyone mic’ing their drums using a “Y” splitter into a single channel of the T1?
Bose suggested this for use with the T1 and I have been doing it for some time now.

Contrary to the recommended “SM57 Differential” preset, and placing the mics a few feet overhead near the floor tom and hi-hat, I’ve been using a *Close-mic’ing* technique. Using the overhead method, I could get a bit of mid/high end reinforcement, but didn’t feel that the highs were what I needed to hear more of…not from my position on stage. I get plenty of cymbals and snare, it was the low end fullness on the toms that I wanted to hear, in the floor tom especially.

So bear in mind that this method is what works best *for me, onstage*.
I’m not taking into consideration what the audience might like.
This is strictly for my own comfort while playing.

I am mic’ing using Sennheiser E604s and a Y cable. One mic clipped to my 10” rack tom, set low, and aimed *across the tom* to pick up the 8” tom as well. The other mic is on my floor tom also aimed across the drum, but often I’ll aim it right down at the head, if I don’t want snare bleed, or desire more rumble from the tom. Using the Bose *general overhead* preset, I am getting nice, full tone from the toms.
I do have to use Moon-gel on the floor tom to deaden it just a bit or I get too much ring.

Although overall EQ affects all mics using this method, some individual EQ is achieved by moving the mic positions.

This has been working very well, but at a gig last weekend, I was in a larger room with a loud band & wanted to mic the snare drum as well.

Not having an extra channel on the T1, but having an extra “Y” cable, I unhooked the mic cable from the rack tom’s send on the first splitter, and hooked up the other splitter to it. From there I hooked back up the rack tom and used the other send for the snare. So now, all three mics were in channel two on the T1.

I was telling starvin007 about all this and he said:

That's very cool Pete. Well worth sharing.

What preset did you choose?

Did it affect your levels?

Was it noisy with that many connections?

Did you use all the same mics?

So, in answer to Rick:

General overhead preset.

Levels- yes, I had to increase the volume on the T1 from 11 to 1 o’clock after hooking in the snare.

There was no added noise to the sound with the extra mic…nothing seemed to change at all tone-wise either.

I was using all E604 mics.

There you have it…I hope this helps if anyone is into trying this out.

Thanks Pete

I'm sure anyone miking A-drums will find this helpful. It's a great workaround when you have limited mic inputs.

Have you tried the SM57 Hand Percussion preset with your setup?

I believe that I have used that one, yes.
But that was a while back, and usually, without much thought, I just go for General Overhead and it seems fine to me.

As I remember, I liked the Hand Percussion preset, but don't remember why...a little crisper maybe?
I'd think that it would be more EQ'd for higher pitched items; shaker, congas, tamborine, etc.
Not so much for low tom rumble...

I really should experiment more.
The next few gigs are *Cub* gigs, V-drums,
but I'll let you know how the next A-drum gig goes.
