Acoustic act with guitar, vocals and conga drums. Can't get enough volume from the congas without feeding back. We use either sm57 or sm58 about 4-6 inches off the heads. Congas cant keep up with the gtr and vocals...Help! I love the bose but need to push the congas..

My friend who plays conga and djembe puts pickups on all his handdrums. Currently he's using pickup-the-world pickups. David Enke from Pickup-the-World was at the first Bose users conference at Big Sur. Most contact pickups would give you the extra volume you need with pretty good results sonically.

Hi Dave & Jack, and Tom,

I bought one of David Enke's transducers for my Djembe ($175), but haven't installed it yet,
I've heard them in action in Big Sur, as Tom did, and they are remarkable.
It does involve a hole in your congas for the best installation.
There is a workaround if you glue the phono plug works to the outside of the drum but that bothers me.

I have had great luck up to now, mic'ing my Remo 15" Djembe with a Clip-on E-604 Sennheiser Tom Mic.
There is no reason a 57 shouldn't do just as well if not better.

You need to get the capsule closer to the head than 4-6" though.
I keep mine about 1" above, and aimed toward the center of the head.
It's plenty loud, I've jammed with a metal band using it, and it kicked.
Two congas would involve two mics...sharing won't get you close enough to the volume you want.
Just like rack toms...it's gotta be one-on-one to get it in-your-face.

Hey Dave & Jack,

This is a new device by the Porchboard folks, check it out online.

No video clip online yet, but it sounds very, very authentically like a conga or djembe, and plugs directly in.

I own a couple of porchboards, the regular model, and they are great.
This product is no exception, and might be the cure for the conga problem.
I'm definitely going to pick one up.

Thanks Drummer. We have a show next week. I'll try getting the 57s closer to the heads. I've actually been trying to back them off thinking that may help. Backward logic i guess.. Thanks again. Dave
