Hi, First post. so just a quickie ?????
Just bought 2 x L1 Classics with 2 x B1 Classics and I've added 2 new B1's. The Classics were advertised as Model 1, but when I got to the guys house I could see by the handle on the B1 that they were the Classic. A quick look inside the Powerbase confirmed they were the Classic. Thanks to the forum for giving me that info'. Anyway, the deal went ahead and I'm absolutely delighted with the buy and I'm raring to go. I'll be using the Bose in a few different ways and I'd appreciate any help from this forum. I would be labelled more an 'Entertainer' rather than a 'Musician' and, although I've earned a living as a Drummer, I always lean more towards being a Singer/Comedian who can play Drums fairly well. The different ways I'll be using the Bose are :- 1. As a straight forward PA for Solo Cabaret work - Vocals @ Backing tracks. 2. With a Jazz Quartet - Electronic Drums/Vocal - Electric Guitar/Vocal, Electric Bass & Female Lead Vocal 3. With Electronic Drums/Drumless Midi Backing Tracks/Drummer Vocal. ( Yes, just me - Billy-no-mates !!) I've been persuded to try this venture for some close friends who own a Restaurant and want some 'High Class', 'Top Notch', 'Thoroughly entertaining'.....CHEAP, easy listening music. We've had a trial run and they are very impressed and also think that the idea of a Drummer 'on his own' is just a little bit unique. I admit that it has been fun doing it, even though I had to spend a couple of weeks editing Midi tracks on Cubase. So we're going to give it a try. My only problem with the first attempt was being able to hear the melody well enough to add the Vocal and play Drums. It's incredible how much noise around 80 people make when they are chatting and eating. Of course the last thing that the Restaurant owner wants me to do is reach for the Volume control. This where I think the Bose will prove to be invaluable, as it will directly let me hear what's going out and provide that low volume, well dispersed audio that it's well regarded for. I currently use a Mackie set up of 2 x SA1521 Active Speakers and a CFX12 Mixer and this has been with me for some 8 years and has been a faithful companion on every gig. Unfortunately, my Wife isn't getting any younger and she just can't manage to lift the Speakers in to the Van anymore. So out of the kindness of my heart I've let her buy the Bose L1's so that she can still manage to pack the gear away at the end of the gig and let me sit down and have a Beer or two. I'm going to use my Yamaha O1V mixer with the Bose because it has a similar set up to the Tonematch in being able to Store/Call up settings. It possibly has a minor fault on the Stereo channels 13/14, 15/16, so I will be inputing the connections from my Drum module and Midi player into individual channels and panning those channels Left and Right with my Vocal centred Sorry if this is turning into a Novel, I'm trying to get to the point - trust me ! The Hardware Hart Dynamics customised kit with Roland TD20 Module Miditemp Multistation - Plays Audio/MP3/MIDI ETC. Heil PR35 Vocal mic. Bose L1 Classic (2) & B1 Bass (4) For scenarios 1 & 2 ( Cabaret and Jazz quartet ) I think I can find enough information on the forum to cope with any issues I may have, but for the 'One man Band' I'm unsure about a few things so I may need some help. I'm certainly no Sound Techie. Here we go :- 1. The Yamaha O1v - If I go with the Stereo main out will this be too hot for the L1's, and if so would the Channel pad switches be the answer or maybe there's another way out of the Mixer, or would I still need to buy a couple of Pads? ( Just sold a nice pad in Spain, Tch !!) 2. As the Roland module and the Miditemp both output in Stereo to the mixer am I correct in routing the Mixer main outs as so - one L1 Left and one L1 Right ? 3. I read that there is a benefit to using the remotes even though there is a Mixer present. Is that the case here ? 4. Positioning of the B1's. I think this is a 'No-brainer' so I'll definitely ask the question. If I stack them 4 high in the centre I will be sitting directly in front of them, albeit a couple of metres away. Should they go 2 each side with the L1's. OK Folks, is anyone still awake. Promise not to waffle on any more. Just trying to make sure I'm not missing some critical issues with Panning etc etc. Appreciate any comments Regards Max |

Hi Max,
Nice to meet you and thank you for joining the forum. Great first post - lots of info.
Yes, the Stereo Main Outs (XLR +4 dBu) will probably be too hot for the L1®s. The Channel pad switches only work on the inputs not the outputs. But, there is another way out of the mixer. Use the Omni Outs. See page 116 of the O1V Owners Manual (you will have to click on Resources to see the link to the manual). This will tell you how to configure the Omni Outs (the four ¼ inch jack outputs. You will want to assign these as the left and right channels of the stereo output. Then make your connection from two of the Omni Outs to Channel 1 on each of your Classic Power Stands. Here is a picture of page 116 in the O1V Manual.
Sure - I would certainly try it.
If you have the gain staging optimized throughout, the Power Stands can output their maximum without the Remote attached. So no, the Remote is not absolutely necessary.
We have an article about that. In response to: "where and how is the best way to place the B1; single, double, and quad" Chris-at-Bose wrote an article: B1 Bass Module/Positioning
I think you are off to a good start. How far apart will you place your L1®s? If less than 20 - 25 feet, consider running your vocal through just one L1®. You will probably get better presence and clarity for your voice. |

Hello ST,
Thanks for accepting my 'Waffle' so graciously, and a huge thank you for the help. I've got the L1's set up here so I'll be having a little fiddle later on. Luckily we've got a large room that I'm able to use as my music room. I know it's no comparison to any of the venues but it gives me chance to play around and get used to things. The room is 8 metres X 5 metres with a very high ceiling. I've got the L1's about 2,5 metres apart with the kit a couple of metres in front. I've got the Yamaha manual in there so I'm just off to read up on the omni-outs. I thought it was too simple to be able to press a button on the Channel strip !! so I'll have to check out the 'routing' Thanks again Max |
