Hey Guys,
I found something very interesting last night. I run my Roland TD-12 kick drum from the module via Output 1, and into the T1, using Gen Kick preset...great. The rest of the kit goes out of the Roland L/mono output into the T1, Flat setting. (Vocal mic/ch 1 & Break music/ch 3-4) I've been running this way for a dozen gigs. Last night I needed an extra vocal mic input from the T1, so I had to move my "kit" output from the Roland directly into the Model IIs Analog input. It worked beautifully, so much so that I intend to run it that way all the time. I formerly liked having the drums in the T1 for reverb on occasion, but it is only on a tune or two, so I can do without it. The thing I noticed is the EQ difference between the T1s drum ch CAT5 output vs. the Analog In on the PS2. The analog input was much more crisp and punchier than from the T1 ! Yes, I was running the T1 "flat", no EQ anywhere, no effects, no nothing. Gain was up around 1 O'clock, with the Roland Volume Out at 3 O'clock. When I moved the Roland to the PS2 analog input, I turned the Roland down to 11am, the PS2 Trim to around 1pm. It's NOT just a volume difference here...the analog input is much brighter and punchier. It could be some kind of "presence" difference in the Trim controls, but I really don't think so. I moved them around quite a bit to see if I could match the tones without any EQing. I switched back and forth a few times and the difference was very noticeable. Question is: Is the built-in software controlled EQ on the PS2 different for the Cat5 input and the Analog? No preset? Same cable between the Roland and the T1™ as between the Roland and the Model II Powerstand? |

No preset.
Uh...no. I use a pair of 3' Horizons, bought new for Roland/T1 use. Used a 10' homemade from a bulk reel of pro audio cable and Switchcraft ends to go to the PS2. There is the first variable. Something else I thought of later today. When using my Classic, the Roland kick drum would often peak the LED into red before reaching a volume I thought I needed. Although I heard no distortion, I would move the cable to channels 3 or 4 in that case, and would get more volume...no red light to bother me. Out of sight, out of mind. Only difference there is that I did get more volume, but never noticed a change in tone. |

I think this DJ is experiencing what I did.

UPDATE: ST was right as usual. I found my 3' cable had a single strand of the + wire touching the ground on the 1/4" plug. Didn't short the cable out totally, but sure could have caused the quality problem. The other end of the cable finally broke completely which led me to inspect it. |
