Sounds like people are learning the ins and outs of playing drumkit through the Personalized Amplification System.

Being a percussionist myself, I'd like to hear about everyone's experiences using our system with hand percussion or other percussion instruments. Percussionists......feel free! Smile

I second that request. I perform with a Celtic group and use a wide variety of percussion instruments. We are looking at the PAS but I would like to hear some percussionists' points of view...

David... I play in a group called the Big Sur Natives, which is primarily a drum circle with only one melodic instrument (moi`).

We use 4 to 5 'world beat' percussionists a performance... Each percussionist has been so impressed with how huge their particular drums sound through the Bose, that they have individually purchased their own system.

Also every nuance, (such as finger rolls, scrapes, etc...) are heard (enhanced) like never before. The Bose has served as a major inspiration to each of them...

Joseph, That is exactly what I was hoping to hear. What are some of the drums used and how do you mic them?

With the Celtic group I typically play doumbek, djembe, bodhran, and a few other frame drums.

I have some Djembe experience:

The only way I could get a sound that compared to the beautiful sound of the drum itself in a good room was to use 2 microphones.

One mounted on an LP Claw, a Beta 57 near the edge of the head about 3" up aimed across the drum. I also had to position an AKG D112 aimed up into the drum from the bottom (a Beta 57 also worked well) for the bass frequencies. Mixing the two mics gave me the best sound.

I could not get the "Boom" sound from just an overhead mic, nor the slap from a bottom mounted mic.

I also found that the room effects the mic'd sound of the Djembe, a couple rooms I played in had no bass response, and micing did not help me out much, it just sounded flat. The drum sounds great in our church, un-mic'd.

Joseph, how do your guys mic that type of drum?

Drumr and Davidh, I'm not sure exactly what Mics the guys use... when Brock gets back from New Zealand I'll ask him for you. I know he uses a specific kind of mic for both the front and the back when he's playing seated...

We, the Big Sur Natives, use doumbek, djembe, congas, oversized congas, tablas. frame drums
...etc. depending on who's playing that night ...

Here's a photo of Brock's front mic set-up... meanwhile... go to this thread and check out some photos of the players...

Only slightly off topic....
Have you guys tried the Roland Handsonic HPD-15 ?

I'm thinking about adding one to my bag of tricks.

Focus.. the Roland Handsonic HPD-15 sounds incredible through the BOSE.

It's an amazing instrument which doesn't require
a lot of technique to play a myriad of percussion sounds well. Just a solid sense of rhythm since through the BOSE you are very exposed...

(Hey that rhymes, "through the Bose, you are very exposed"... Indeed a catch phrase... use it if you wish. Wink)

Barklie plays one with the Big Sur Natives. However, he has a background in traditional percussion. Here's a photo of it in action...

THANKS !
I just ordered one.

I've played a fair amount of hand percussion so I think I'll be ok on the hand-skill part of the deal... I may take a year to get it programed the way I want tho <G>
Is Barklie using a roland stand for it or something else? Those stands seem a bit pricy to me.

BTW, the price just dropped on these things because the HPD-10 is about to start shipping. ( one less pedal, and no ribbon controlers )

I love my Handsonic. The Bose makes it sound amazing. I do drum solos on it and drummers have come over trying to figure out how I get such great sound and with such a wee toy. Sooo cool. I use either a snare stand when seated or one of those stands made by "On Stage Stands"for holding mixers and things that have 5 wheels and can adjust way higher than the snare stand.

Thanks, I saw those Mixer stands. They're about 40 bucks less than Roland's .
Could be the way I'll go.

The wheel foot print is a little wide but can help to hold the pedals in place. Plus those stands can be used for a bunch of things. I have two of them.

That is the same response I had when I picked up an HPD-15. We recently had a friends 4-year old daughter spend over an hour playing the HDP-15 through the Bose system. She was really inspired!

Wife just saw the new HPD-15 today... at first she just thought I'd gotten a new low-end toy... then she heard it and started asking " uh.... this was REALLY expensive wasn't it ??"

errr...ummm well ....

Hey, I just sold my Yamaha DD-50, my Boss BR-8 recorder - and am about to sell my old Fender Champ amp. ( vintage 68 ) and my Art DSP II tube-pre .
That will get me close <G>

Those Roland Hand Percussion Digital Units should win an award for one of the best musical inventions of the new Millennium so far~~they really sound incredible.~~aren't difficult to play~~I've had a lot of fun trying to improve the groove with these babies.

I've heard many groups, both big and small ensembles use them~~ they are starting to gain in popularity~~deservingly so. I know about three guys who use them all the time~~everywhere!!!

You can even play limited melodies with some of the pitched percussion settings like Marimba, Vibes~~etc. Like a pentatonic scale (5 notes).

I can just imagine how great these sound playing through a Bose. The sample sounds on these units are the real tones~~

If your eyes were closed and you heard someone playing congas in the appropriate manner on the Roland Unit~~it might be difficult to tell the difference Cool Cool Wink

Focus... can you tell us a little more about your HPD-15? I bet it's such a totally hip gadget... One can become an instant percussionist and find all the technique needed, simply captured in a sampled, touch sensative, sound-pad ... amazingly accurate samples at that... Smile
