This first one is of me getting ready to do a solo. I'm a math teacher and mc the talent show at my school. It became tradition for me to close the show with a solo.

This is one of me practicing the freehand/one hand roll thing.

I just got a cable that converts analog to digit, so I'm uploading some of my old practice video.

Hi Isosceles,

I really enjoyed these clips. Like so many of your contributions here, these just set me thinking about things in a different way.

Thank you.

The freehand/one hand roll thing was ... well I don't think I've actually seen or noticed anyone doing that.

What are you sitting on in the Sonor Hilites videos?

Sometimes Guitar shredders talk about notes per second. Do you have any idea how many hits per second you can do? Or do Drummers bother with such things?

Thanks for the kind words. I'm sitting on a canister throne. It's a case as well as a seat. It's a retro thing. As far as notes per second, I can play 32nd notes at 130bpm, but not very long, a measure or two tops. At 120bpm, that would be 16 notes per second. So a little more than 16 notes per second.

Like ST, me too! Very cool. The practice session for the talent show closing was great. It sounded like a whole corps to me. To be honest, I've never been a huge fan of a drum solo, so a 3+ minute one should have sent my finger to the close button. But it was so musical. It all had purpose and flowed very well to my ears. Now, the deal that you played to your left, about the size of a notebook...Was that the Roland Sonor such-and-such that was in the YouTube title? That's a cool thing, indeed. How many pads are on it? How about voices? It really integrates well with the acoustic kit.

Oh, I've never heard of a one-hand roll. With eyes shut, I would not know the difference. Neat.

Glad I checked out this thread.

Best,

BBE

I too was very impressed and mesmerized by your playing.

Thank you for letting us know about it.

Are there explicit connections between your work in music and your work as a math teacher?

Thanks for the very nice words. It makes me want to work harder.
As far as connections, I apply a lot of what I do teaching math to what I do teaching drums. Break it done to small easy tasks. Lets say I'm teaching a drum student a complex one measure beat. I'll ask them just to play beat one, they will then play it with no problem. I'll then ask them just to play beat two, and again, no problem.
After we get through all four parts, I'll then let them know that they can play the parts they just have to put it together.
I’ll then ask them to practice the rhythm, counting out loud and being cognitive of what they are doing. I also explain about how the brain changes with the growth of dendrites. That as they learn, paths (dendrites) grow in the brain. I also explain muscle memory. By the next lesson, I want them to be able to play without thinking, just play. This is the approach I use when I’m learning new rhythms. I’m real cognitive (thoughtful, brain thinking what I’m doing) when I’m first learning. Then it becomes music that just happens.

The electronic pad is a Roland SPD 11. I got it in the early 90s. There are eight pads and I believe 255 sounds.

'The last time I saw a single stroke one handed roll was by Joe Merelo. I can't recall even seeing Buddy Rich do a one handed single stroke roll. You must have an electronic wrist!!!!!

Great style!
